Mou Zongsan (1909-1995) was one of the major Chinese philosophers of the twentieth century, whose entire intellectual enterprise consisted of rethinking the relevance in the modern age of Chinese thought in general and Confucianism in particular. Although his seminal work is now a reference point everywhere in the Chinese world, research on the topic in English remains scarce. This book explores a pivotal dimension of Mou’s philosophy—that is, his project of reconstructing a moral metaphysics based largely on a dialogue between reinterpreted Chinese thought and Kantism. It provides the reader with direct access to Mou Zongsan’s thought by introducing translated excerpts of his work and thoroughly explores a number of his most paradigmatic concepts.

An Outline of the History of Chinese Thought by Hu Shih

This book presents the syllabus of Hu Shih’s course on the History of Chinese Thought, which he taught at Harvard University from 1944 to 1945, and has been transcribed from his (more than 1500) hand-written notes. This book focuses on Hu Shih’s in-depth study and interpretation of Chinese intellectual history and philosophy, etc. It also distills the development of China’s long and complex intellectual history over the past 3,000 years into a clear and succinct outline. Transcribing, collating and publishing this valuable hand-written manuscript for the first time, the book represents a truly unique historical document.

This edited volume analyzes land utilization data from farm surveys taken in China between 1929 and 1933. This data, which was the foundation for John Lossing Buck’s seminal work Land Utilization in China (1937), was thought lost to history until rediscovered in 2000. The book presents the first modern analyses of agricultural economics in Republican China using Buck’s micro-data, covering important topics such as nutritional poverty, tenancy issues, land productivity, surplus labor, workers’ incomes, credit supply, and regional differences. Through using modern analytical methods, this book presents a more accurate picture of the agricultural economy in the Republican Era and will be of particular interest to agricultural economists, economic historians, and Chinese studies scholars.

Inflammation in Skin-Related Diseases

Inflammation in Skin-Related Diseases

It has been revealed that inflammation plays an important role in the progression of skin-related diseases, including burn or trauma wounds, diabetes wounds, pressure ulcers, radiation ulcers, keloids, hypertrophic scars, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, vitiligo, etc, causing skin tissue to exhibit over-inflammation, lower inflammation, or chronic inflammation. During this process, bacteria invasion, microbiota dysbiosis, or autoimmunity are known as the general initiators to induce the abnormal activity of immune cells and molecules and could change the crosstalk between immune cells and repair cells (or interstitial cells). Therefore, the research deep into the novel mechanisms of inflammation, the new signal pathway of immunity chain responses, or the new relationship between inflammation and repair cells, is of great interest for the design of novel therapies for skin-related diseases.
