Korkeakosken kylällä on asunut monenlaisia ihmisiä. Maailma on muuttunut ja muuttuu edelleen. Omavaraistaloudesta on siirrytty vaihdantatalouteen. Kaikkea ei enää tarvitsekaan tehdä itse. On syntynyt uusia ammatteja ja ammattikuntia. Kaikki rehellisesti tehty työ ja kaikki laillinen liiketoiminta on arvokasta. Jokainen ihminen on yhtä tärkeä, ainutlaatuinen yksilö huolimatta seksuaalisesta suuntautumisestaan, ihonväristä...

Mikael Agricolan Uuden testamentin reunahuomautukset

This book examines a topical phenomenon from a previously neglected perspective by bringing together multidisciplinary insights from the field of humanities into human-nature relations. So far, the changes in biodiversity have been mainly studied by natural scientists. We approach the human relationship with the changing biodiversity from three different angles: 1) Belonging and non-belonging, 2) Emotions and 3) Environmental Policy. The question of belonging and non-belonging is crucial when it comes to changing biodiversity. We ask who decides where species can move and live and when invasive becomes native. Similarly, emotions have a big role in human-nature relations. Our book shows why ...

Kieliä ja kohtaamisia Turun historiassa

The present volume is a multidisciplinary collection of research articles exploring language use, language contact and multilingualism in the history of Turku, the first town in Finland, founded around the turn of the fourteenth century. Consisting of an introduction by the editors and nine case studies in the fields of linguistics, history, archeology, and literary and cultural studies, the volume participates in a wider discussion on multilingual communities while offering a closer look into linguistic encounters in Turku and its immediate vicinity. The volume covers the period from the Middle Ages (c. 1100–1500) to the latter half of the twentieth century. The case studies illustrate the wide array of languages, linguistic varieties and registers that the inhabitants and travellers used in their daily lives, the specific contexts in which certain languages were used, and the effects of these linguistic encounters at personal, social or institutional levels.

Songs and writings: oral and literary cultures in early-modern Finland renews the understanding of exchange between the learned culture of clergymen and the culture of commoners, or “folk”. What happened when the Reformation changed the position of the oral vernacular language to literary and ecclesiastical, and when folk beliefs seem to have become an object for more intensive surveillance and correction? How did clergymen understand and use the versatile labels of popular belief, paganism, superstition and Catholic fermentation? Why did they choose particular song languages, poetic modes and melodies for their Lutheran hymns and literary poems, and why did they avoid oral poetics in ce...

Bridging the Gap Between Policy and Science in Assessing the Health Status of Marine Ecosystems, 2nd Edition

Marine management requires approaches which bring together the best research from the natural and social sciences. It requires stakeholders to be well-informed by science and to work across administrative and geographical boundaries, a feature especially important in the inter-connected marine environment. Marine management must ensure that the natural structure and functioning of ecosystems is maintained to provide ecosystem services. Once those marine ecosystem services have been created, they deliver societal goods as long as society inputs its skills, time, money and energy to gather those benefits. However, if societal goods and benefits are to be limitless, society requires appropriate administrative, legal and management mechanisms to ensure that the use of such benefits do not impact on environmental quality, but instead support its sustainable use.
