Cornelius (Con) Leeds stumbles on a deadly world of child abuse, drug-dealing motorcycle gangs and murder when he is hired to find the granddaughter of a wealthy New York businessman. The action is salted with memorable characters, from Thelma Herzog, Con¡_s chain-smoking landlady and amateur assistant, to a flashy pimp who attends AA meetings and works a day job as an electrician. But the most unforgettable is Con himself, an ex-NYPD homicide detective, who prefers to live in a cottage on a peaceful Pine Barrens river but must come to the glitzy gambling mecca of Atlantic City to work as a private investigator.

The NEA Fellowships have also recognized many writers before their talents were acknowledged by a wider audience, such as Alice Walker, Tobias Wolff, and Maxine Hong Kingston.
