This publication examines how opening sequences in films, classic and contemporary, act as hooks to draw the viewer into the film, showing frame by frame how graphics, type and animation are used to create atmosphere, set tone, and lend impact to movies. From Hitchcock and Godard to Tarantino, Luc Besson, and Tim Burton, this large format coffee table book finally illuminates this critical role designers play in filmmaking and gives credit to those that often go uncredited.

Britain has a rich heritage of school buildings dating from the later Middle Ages to the present day. While some of these schools have attracted the attention of architectural historians, they have not previously been considered from the educational viewpoint. Even schools of little or no architectural interest are important sociologically, since the changing architecture of schools reflects changing ideas about how children should be educated and organized for teaching purposes. Documentary material relating to education is often fragmentary, and buildings may thus constitute the only real source of knowledge about the development of particular schools and can also throw light on general educational history. Originally published in 1971, this book is, therefore, not only a major contribution to architectural history but also a study in the development of educational ideas and practices from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century.

The volume also offers an analysis of the Sprechstimme in each melodrama in the context of the surrounding texture and directed by the principles of analysis Schoenberg established in his essays and lectures. Inside Pierrot lunaire makes a case fo...

With language unencumbered by technical jargon, these scholarly writings bring to life the various facets of Schoenberg's creative process and its influence. Topics include biographical essays, surveys of the music from different periods in Schoenberg's career, and essays on the development of Schoenberg's style, on Schoenberg's attitudes toward music, composition and analysis, and the effect of and interpretation of Schoenberg's music. The contributors provide different points of view based on their unique specialties. The resulting breadth of information illuminates distinct aspects of Schoenberg's musical career. The Arnold Schoenberg Companion aims to introduce Schoenberg and his music to a nonspecialist audience. The chronological essays place Schoenberg and his achievements in the context of the past and present. The contributing authors include scholars and composers of different generations, including two of his American students. The companion also contains an annotated bibliography and discography, and is an invaluable resource to scholars and researchers.
