The Real Ireland

The Real Ireland is the first study of Irish documentary film, but more than that, it is a study of Ireland itself--of how the idea of Ireland evolved throughout the twentieth century and how documentary cinema both recorded and participated in the process of change. More than just a film studies work, it is a discussion of history, politics and culture, which also explores the philosophical roots of the documentary idea, and how this idea informs concepts of society, self and nation. It features rare and previously unseen illustrations and a detailed documentary filmography, the first of its kind in print anywhere.

Action Movies

Action Movies: The Cinema of Striking Back is a study of action cinema, exploring the ethics and aesthetics of the genre with reference to its relatively short history. It moves from seminal classics like Bullitt (1968) and Dirty Harry (1971) through epoch-defining films like Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) and Die Hard (1988) to revisions, reboots, and renewals in films like Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003), Taken (2008), and The Expendables (2010). The action genre is a fusion of form and content: a cinema of action about action. It is a cinema of the will, configured as a decisive reaction to untenable circumstances. Action heroes take up arms against the sea of troubles that beset them, safe in the knowledge that if they don't do it, nobody will. Though this makes the action movie profoundly disturbing as an embodiment of moral ideology, its enduring appeal proves the appetite for assurance remains undiminished, even in the wake of 9/11.

This timely collection of essays considers the nature and direction of Irish film and television, and also explores the contributions of other media including radio and the internet to contemporary Irish culture. It includes topics such as the first Irish-language soap opera, the new Irish gangsters, Irish identity post-11 September, images of Belfast in recent Irish film, female punishment in Irish history and culture, and print and radio coverage of the `Roy Keane affair' as a proving ground for new Irish masculinity. Keeping it Real: Irish Film and Television reflects a desire to hear new voices on new topics, as well as a current popular and academic desire to extend the notion of Irishness to include not just the inhabitants of the State but also the wider diaspora - particularly of Great Britain and North America, questioning issues of national identity and ethnicity - and is therefore required reading for those interested in Irish film, media and cultural studies.

Adventure Movies

This volume examines the cinema of adventure, distinct from action and action-adventure. It argues that the adventurer is separate from the action hero and that the cinema of adventure—from tales of gods and monsters defied by mythic heroes to stories of crusaders conquering far-flung territories, from true-life accounts of survival or death at the extreme reaches of human endurance to science-fiction stories of journeys beyond human conception—represents a life-affirming confrontation with our collective mortality and spiritual immortality. Adventure heroes do not fear death like action heroes. They embrace and transcend death with a conviction grounded in a faith that extends behind and before them into eternity. They achieve immortality by telling and retelling their tales across media forms in spite of social and technological change.

“The Church opposes any unjust treatment of homosexual persons, insisting on their equal dignity before God and firmly correcting anyone who in any way ridicules homosexual persons. Harvey Founder of Courage For more than thirty years, Courage has been helping same-sex-attracted Catholic men and women to lead chaste lives.
