Shifting Perspectives of Postcolonialism in Twenty-First-Century Anglophone-Arab Fiction explores the flourishing Anglophone-Arab fiction after 9/11. Central to this expansion are the socio-political changes in the aftermath of the 9/11attacks, not only on the international scene, but also at the local level within the Arab/Muslim world. Paralleling this expansion is a shift from traditional postcolonial discourse toward Arab nation’s internal issues. Rather than echoing the outmoded “writing back” paradigm, the Anglophone-Arab writers have taken up specific social and political concerns through their writings and offer a trenchant commentary on issues of indigenous and international significance. Moving away from postcolonial political awareness, Anglophone-Arab writers provide a critical perspective on some important contemporary issues facing the Arab nations like misuse of religious discourse, sectarianism, terrorism, feminism, class struggle, political rights and democracy, and the fragmentation of the Arab society.
This book locates spatial dimensions possible for a global identity, while incorporating the presence of collaborative and contentious religious, psycho-social and physical borders. It highlights the significance of space in the construction of racial, gender, religious, cultural idiosyncrasies where private and public space projects the power mechanisms which allocate borders. The literary narratives discussed in this collection project a trajectory of voices of the East and West, male and female, crossing boundaries between identity, race, gender and class. The book proffers that spatial borders are social constructs to propagate the power mechanisms of hierarchical structures, defying imbrications, explored here, which may be used to reflect diversity as a model for global space. These explorations are journeys back and forth in time and space towards hierarchies formed through the imposition of borders defining race, gender and power which may be considered ‘post’ in the postmodern, postcolonial, post 9/11, post-secular and postfeminist senses.

This book is the sequel to Britain Through Muslim Eyes and examines contemporary novelistic representations of and by Muslims in Britain. It builds on studies of the five senses and ‘sensuous geographies’ of postcolonial Britain, and charts the development since 1988 of a fascinating and important body of fiction by Muslim-identified authors. It is a selective literary history, exploring case-study novelistic representations of and by Muslims in Britain to allow in-depth critical analysis through the lens of sensory criticism. It argues that, for authors of Muslim heritage in Britain, writing the senses is often a double-edged act of protest. Some of the key authors excoriate a suppression or cover-up of non-heteronormativity and women’s rights that sometimes occurs in Muslim communities. Yet their protest is especially directed at secular culture’s ocularcentrism and at successive British governments’ efforts to surveil, control, and suppress Muslim bodies.

This collection presents a sort of counter-history or counter-genealogy of the globalization of French thought from the point of view of scholars working in the UK. While the dominating discourse would attribute the US as the source of that globalization, particularly through the 1966 conference on the Languages of Criticism and the Sciences of Man at Johns Hopkins University, this volume of essays serves as a reminder that the UK has also been a principal motor of that globalization. The essays take into account how French thought and literary theory have institutionally taken shape in the UK from the 70s to today, highlight aspects of French thought that have been of particular pertinence or importance for scholars there, and outline how researchers in the UK today are bringing French thought further in terms of teaching and research in this twenty-first century.
