Pedro Cabrita Reis
London focuses on the four London projects to date by renowned Portuguese artist Pedro Cabrita Reis, at Haunch of Venison and the Frieze Art Fair in 2005, Camden Arts Centre in 2004, and Pearl Projects in 2003. Reis is interested in man's relationship to architecture and the fabricated environments in which we live. The exhibition included three sculptures and a group of five large scale monochrome paintings in sombre dark colours presented behind glass, creating perspectival boxes that reflect the room in which they are sited. On close inspection the monochrome fabric makes its material presence felt and the viewer's gaze flits between seeing their own image and the work's materiality. Included is a conversation between the artist and David Batchelor, and a major new essay by art critic Sarah Kent. Pedro Cabrita Reis (b.1956) represented Portugal at the 2003 Venice Biennale.
Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby
Acclaimed London based designers Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby are two of the most innovative design practitioners working in Britain today. Recently chosen to design the Olympic Torch for the London 2012 Games, they engage in many forms of design, from industrial design to architecture.Their collaborative exhibition Ascent, presented eight new pieces (and related drawings) inspired by the structures and engineered forms of moving craft: forms that have, what Barber and Osgerby refer to as 'hidden design'.Interest in these fields originated in their respective childhoods. Castellani + Castellani
Castellani e Castellani is a special exhibition of both new and seminal work by Enrico Castellani, one of Italy's most influential artists.The show features new paintings that continue the dialogue set forth in his formative Angolare series as well as present his critically acclaimed Spazio Ambiente, a roomlike environment from 1970 that has rarely been exhibited publicly, and which is graciously on loan from the Fendi collection.Although created decades apart, the works exemplify Castellani's signature style and merge art, space and architecture to transcend the confines of painting.Formally trained as an architect, Castellani focuses on manipulating the surface configurations of his canvases to alter perceptions of space. Home Lands
Home Lands - Land Marks is an exhibition of new and recent work from seven leading South African artists at Haunch of Venison, London, and the first in London to focus on contemporary South African art since 1995. The publication focuses on images and invocations of landscape which explore contemporary South Africa. Differing from the usual approach to post-apartheid South Africa, the exhibition addresses the complexity of the South African landscape, reflecting upon notions of memory, place and identity, referring to the political context and historical background of South Africa only through the imprint and trace of human experience on the physical landscape.
