This book contains the papers presented at the International Symposium, "The Optimum Shape: Automated Structural Design," held at the General Motors Research Laboratories on September 3D-October 1, 1985. This was the 30th symposium in a series which the Research Laboratories began sponsoring in 1957. Each symposium has focused on a topic that is both under active study at the Research Laboratories and is also of interest to the larger technical community. While attempts to produce a structure which performs a certain task with the minimum amount of resources probably predates recorded civilization, the idea of coupling formal optimization techniques with computer-based structural analysis te...
This book contains the edited version of lectures and selected papers presented at the NATO ADVANCED STUDY INSTITUTE ON COMPUTER AIDED OPTIMAL DESIGN: Structural and Mechanical Systems, held in Tr6ia, Portugal, 29th June to 11th July 1986, and organized by CEMUL -Center of Mechanics and Materials of the Technical University of Lisbon. The Institute was attended by 120 participants from 21 countries, including leading scientists and engineers from universities, research institutions and industry, and Ph.D. students. Some participants presented invited and contributed papers during the Institute and almost all participated actively in discussions on scientific aspects during the Institute. The...
In this brief we consider some stochastic models that may be used to study problems related to environmental matters, in particular, air pollution. The impact of exposure to air pollutants on people's health is a very clear and well documented subject. Therefore, it is very important to obtain ways to predict or explain the behaviour of pollutants in general. Depending on the type of question that one is interested in answering, there are several of ways studying that problem. Among them we may quote, analysis of the time series of the pollutants' measurements, analysis of the information obtained directly from the data, for instance, daily, weekly or monthly averages and standard deviations. Another way to study the behaviour of pollutants in general is through mathematical models. In the mathematical framework we may have for instance deterministic or stochastic models. The type of models that we are going to consider in this brief are the stochastic ones.

Lactic Acid Bacteria as Cell Factories: Synthetic Biology and Metabolic Engineering describes the most recent developments on the metabolic engineering and synthetic biology of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) for production of biologically active biomolecules (enzymes, organic acids, bacteriocins, bioactive peptides, etc.), recombinant proteins, and their role in bioremediation. The book focuses on synthetic biology and metabolic engineering for the production of biologically active molecules such as bioactive peptides, polysaccharides, vitamins (Riboflavin), enzymes, organic acids (lactic and gamma-aminobutyric acid), flavor and aroma compounds, bacteriocins, recombinant proteins, etc. Individua...
The papers in this volume focus on the following topics: design optimization and inverse problems, numerical optimization techniques, efficient analysis and reanalysis techniques, sensitivity analysis and industrial applications. The conference EngOpt brings together engineers, applied mathematicians and computer scientists working on research, development and practical application of optimization methods in all engineering disciplines and applied sciences.
This book provides an in-depth overview on the manifold functions of fungal extracellular vesicles (EV) which span from cell-to-cell communication, pathogenicity and stimulation of host’s immunity to export of hundreds of biomolecules. The book summarizes the present knowledge on the impact of extracellular vesicles on fungal biology. Extracellular vesicles participate in fundamental biological processes in all living cells but only during the last 15 years the production and functions of EVs were identified and studied in fungal species too. Up to date more than 50 independent studies have shown that extracellular vesicles are produced by at least 20 fungal species. The book addresses researchers and advanced students in Microbiology, Mycology and Biotechnology.
III European Conference on Computational Mechanics: Solids, Structures and Coupled Problem in Engineering Computational Mechanics in Solid, Structures and Coupled Problems in Engineering is today a mature science with applications to major industrial projects. This book contains the edited version of the Abstracts of Plenary and Keynote Lectures and Papers, and a companion CD-ROM with the full-length papers, presented at the III European Conference on Computational Mechanics: Solids, Structures and Coupled Problems in Engineering (ECCM-2006), held in the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering, Lisbon, Portugal 5th - 8th June 2006. The book reflects the state-of-art of Computation Mechanics in Solids, Structures and Coupled Problems in Engineering and it includes contributions by the world most active researchers in this field.
Shape and layout optimization represent some of the most useful but also most difficult classes of problems in structural design, which have been investigated in detail only during the last few years. Shape optimization is concerned with the optimal shape of boundaries of continua or of interfaces between two materials in composites. Layout optimization deals with the simultaneous optimization of the topology, geometry and cross-sectional sizes of structural systems. In spite of its complextiy, layout optimization is a very rewarding task, because it results in much greater savings than the optimization of cross-sectional sizes only. Because of their important role in shape and layout optimization, the book also covers in detail new optimality criteria methods, which are capable of handling many thousand design variables and active design contraints. Shape and layout optimization is becoming an indispensable tool in the design of aeroplanes, space structures, cars, ships, building and civil engineering structures, power stations, chemical plants, artificial organs, sporting equipment, and all other solid systems where stresses and deformations play an important role.
