Heidemarie Uhl war eine renommierte Wissenschaftlerin, Vermittlerin, Ideengeberin, Netzwerkerin und Projektleiterin sowie eine unermüdliche Mentorin, die jungen Wissenschaftler*innen unprätentiös half, ihren Weg zu finden. Für all dies soll diese Publikation eine Würdigung sein. Der vorliegende Beitragsband war als Festschrift für Heidemarie Uhl geplant und sollte ihr Mitte September 2023, rund um ihren 67. Geburtstag, übergeben werden. Mitte August erreichte die Herausgeber*innen völlig unerwartet und viel zu früh die Nachricht von ihrem Tod. Daher ist aus der "Festschrift für" trauriger- und schmerzhafterweise ein Band "in memoriam" Heidemarie Uhl geworden. Die Publikation mit Beiträgen von Kolleg*innen und Freund*innen, Wegefährt*innen und Schüler*innen setzt sich mit dem Forschungsfeld Uhls auseinander: den Erinnerungskulturen und Geschichtspolitiken. Dabei werden unterschiedliche nationale und internationale "Erinnerungsorte" (durchaus im Sinne von topographischen Orten) auf einer mentalen Karte beleuchtet.
The Memory of Guilt Revisited
The collapse of the communist states is regarded as the starting point of the new Europe. With this turning point, historical narratives have had to be rewritten in the post-socialist countries. Focusing on the little known case of Slovenia, this issue of zeitgeschichte offers a comprehensive survey of the transformations affecting collective memory and the writing of history in one post-communist country. The essays analyze the ways in which Slovenian society has grappled with traumatic historical events and thus give insight into the ongoing struggle over the interpretation of Slovenia's past. Given the proliferating illiberal tendencies in the political culture of numerous European countries, the strategies of historical revisionism described in this issue are likely to be of considerable interest not only to scholars interested specifically in the case of Slovenia.

Kritik an der ›verdrängten‹ Vergangenheit und der Ausblendung von Opfergruppen löste seit den 1980ern gesellschaftliche Grundsatzdebatten aus. Zugleich wurde das Gedächtnis als wissenschaftliches Paradigma begründet und avancierte rasch zu einem Leitbegriff der Kulturwissenschaften. Nach zwei Jahrzehnten des Abarbeitens traumatischer Erinnerungslasten der europäischen Nationen gewinnt nun ein Aspekt immer stärker an Bedeutung: Gedächtnis als Reflexionsinstanz. Aus der Beobachterposition des Postmémoire richtet der Band den Blick auf das Feld ›Gedächtnis‹ selbst. Die Beiträge befragen theoretische Positionen und analysieren Verhandlungen, Konflikte und kulturelle Praktiken.
Narrating the Nation
A sustained and systematic study of the construction, erosion and reconstruction of national histories across a wide variety of states is highly topical and extremely relevant in the context of the accelerating processes of Europeanization and globalization. However, as demonstrated in this volume, histories have not, of course, only been written by professional historians. Drawing on studies from a number of different European nation states, the contributors to this volume present a systematic exploration, of the representation of the national paradigm. In doing so, they contextualize the European experience in a more global framework by providing comparative perspectives on the national histories in the Far East and North America. As such, they expose the complex variables and diverse actors that lie behind the narration of a nation.

Zeitgeschichtliche Museen boomen. Die Brisanz der Auseinandersetzung mit Geschichte im Museum zeigt sich in den vielfältigen, zum Teil widersprüchlichen Anforderungen, mit denen sich die Institutionen konfrontiert sehen. In der Habsburgforschung bewirkte der Imperial Turn eine Trendwende - einen Perspektivenwechsel weg vom zerstörerischen Nationalitätenkampf hin zum integrativen Empire. Die Beiträger*innen erkunden integrative Strategien und Handlungsformen, ohne dabei Ambivalenzen und Konflikte auszublenden. Sie zeigen, wie Vielfalt und Differenz in Wissensproduktion und kulturellen Praktiken verarbeitet werden und welche Resonanz sie in der Gedächtniskultur gefunden haben. Damit beleuchten sie aktuelle Herausforderungen aus historischer Perspektive und bieten Orientierung für die heterogenen Gegenwartsgesellschaften.
