Psychotherapy in Pain Management

Within the current opiate crisis, this book provides a timely, comprehensive guide for psychological treatment with chronic pain patients. It is written for academic and practicing psychological professionals, in addition to graduate students, neuroscientists, and neuropsychologists. It provides an explanation of neurophysiological pain processing based the Dimensional Systems Model (DSM), a theory of higher cortical functions. Novel views on the roles of the basal ganglia, cerebellum, and cingulate cortex are presented here, while the applied Clinical Biopsychological Model (CBM) is used to explain psychological treatment with chronic pain patients. Three new areas of treatment focus are discussed in this book, including specific approaches to deal with influential negative emotional memories, interpersonal relationship stressors, and loss-related depression, all of which have been shown to influence chronic pain disorders. Detailed information on how to do assessment, conceptualization, and treatment is also provided. In total, the book offers a unique viewpoint unavailable in any other source.

Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention – MICCAI 2019

The six-volume set LNCS 11764, 11765, 11766, 11767, 11768, and 11769 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 22nd International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention, MICCAI 2019, held in Shenzhen, China, in October 2019. The 539 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 1730 submissions in a double-blind review process. The papers are organized in the following topical sections: Part I: optical imaging; endoscopy; microscopy. Part II: image segmentation; image registration; cardiovascular imaging; growth, development, atrophy and progression. Part III: neuroimage reconstruction and synthesis; neuroimage segmentation; diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging; functional neuroimaging (fMRI); miscellaneous neuroimaging. Part IV: shape; prediction; detection and localization; machine learning; computer-aided diagnosis; image reconstruction and synthesis. Part V: computer assisted interventions; MIC meets CAI. Part VI: computed tomography; X-ray imaging.

Healthcare systems have been in a state of flux for a number of years now due to increasing digitalization. Medicine itself is also facing new challenges, and how to maximize the possibilities of artificial intelligence, whether digitalization can help to strengthen patient orientation, and dealing with the issue of data quality and completeness are all issues which require attention, creativity and research. This book presents the proceedings of the 64th annual conference of the German Association for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology (GMDS 2019), held in Dortmund, Germany, from 8 - 11 September 2019. The theme of this year’s conference is Shaping Change – Creative Solution...

Diffusion MRI

Diffusion MRI remains the most comprehensive reference for understanding this rapidly evolving and powerful technology and is an essential handbook for designing, analyzing, and interpreting diffusion MR experiments. Diffusion imaging provides a unique window on human brain anatomy. This non-invasive technique continues to grow in popularity as a way to study brain pathways that could never before be investigated in vivo. This book covers the fundamental theory of diffusion imaging, discusses its most promising applications to basic and clinical neuroscience, and introduces cutting-edge methodological developments that will shape the field in coming years. Written by leading experts in the f...

Annette Barchanski deals with the question how to design nanoparticles for biomedical research. She considers properties such as size, charge, biocompatibility, and functionalization of nanoparticles from a biologist’s point of view in order to achieve specific cellular responses. The author discusses the structure-function relationship of nanoparticle conjugates derived from a laser-based fabrication method. Both the limits and perspectives of tunable conjugate functions are presented, providing a general outline for researchers to configure functionalized nanoparticles with a specifically optimized design for biomedical requests, e.g. in biomedical engineering regenerative science and reproductive biology.
