Reading Greek Australian Literature through the Paramythi
This is a comparative textual analysis of a body of relatively neglected works by Greek Australian writers Dimitris Tsaloumas, Antigone Kefala, Stylianos Charkianakis, Dean Kalimnios, Christos Tsiolkas, Fotini Epanomitis and Helen Koukoutsis. The focus is on reading their texts as a bridge between multiculturalism and world literature given each writer identifies in various ways with peripheral cosmopolitanism as they merge high-brow literary forms with the quotidian paramythi, or the storytelling oral tradition. The different ways they do this registers the writers’ ambivalent relationship with their origins through their transculturally mediated expression. Discovering new possibilities in literary texts which have oral traces becomes a productive way to look at the question of translatability as posed by scholars of multiculturalism and world literature, such as Sneja Gunew, Emily Apter and Pheng Cheah.
Exploring Intertextuality
This book aims to provide advanced students of biblical studies, seminarians, and academicians with a variety of intertextual strategies to New Testament interpretation. Each chapter is written by a New Testament scholar who provides an established or avant-garde strategy in which: 1) The authors in their respective chapters start with an explanation of the particular intertextual approach they use. Important terms and concepts relevant to the approach are defined, and scholarly proponents or precursors are discussed. 2) The authors use their respective intertextual strategy on a sample text or texts from the New Testament, whether from the Gospels, Acts, Pauline epistles, Disputed Pauline epistles, General epistles, or Revelation. 3) The authors show how their approach enlightens or otherwise brings the text into sharper relief. 4) They end with recommended readings for further study on the respective intertextual approach. This book is unique in providing a variety of strategies related to biblical interpretation through the lens of intertextuality.
Seferis and Elytis as Translators
George Seferis and Odysseus Elytis gave the Modern Greek language a substantial corpus of translations from poets working in French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, English and Ancient Greek. However, the translation practices of these two Nobel Prize-winning poets have long been inadequately observed. The present volume provides a close examination of Seferis' and Elytis' inter- and intra-lingual verse translations with the aim of discovering their translating techniques and their personal and public goals in pursuing the act of translation. Similarities and differences between the two poets are highlighted comparatively. The methodological approach, informed by recent findings in the field of descriptive translation studies and polysystem theories, investigates the function of translation in the target culture and the relation of translation to original poetic production. Throughout the book the study of translation is shown to be a powerful tool for the study of Modern Greek literature and its relation to other literatures and movements of the time, while the task of the translator and the task of the writer unfold as two components of the same endeavour.
