Metrical Claims and Poetic Experience
This volume contributes to the fields of lyric poetry and poetics (especially poetic form), aesthetics, and German literature by intervening in debates on the social functions, cognitive and emotional effects, and the value of poetry. It builds on, and moves beyond, previous theories of rhythm to tie meter more particularly to the specificities of poetic language in blending of embodied responses, cultural situations, and linguistic particularities. The Epic Imaginary
This study analyzes how the imagination of the epic genre as legitimately legitimating community also unleashes an ambivalence between telling coherent ‐ and hence legitimating ‐ stories of political community and narrating open-ended stories of contingency that might de-legitimate political power. Manifest in eighteenth-century poetics above all in the disjunction between programmatic definitions of the epic and actual experiments with the genre, this ambivalence can also arise within a single epic over the course of its narrative. Der halbierte Dichter?
Im allgemeinen literarischen Bewusstsein liegt die eigentlich produktive Phase des Dichters Klopstock in seiner ersten Lebenshälfte, repräsentiert durch das Messias-Epos und einige Oden im Stile der neu konzipierten spirituellen hohen Poesie. Der andere Klopstock, jener der zweiten Schaffenszeit, gilt vielfach als inkommensurabel, als abwegig oder so gut wie nicht existent. Das betrifft vor allem den Verfasser gesellschaftskritischer, pragmatisch-profaner Texte. Das Prosawerk Die Deutsche Gelehrtenrepublik sowie die Oden und Schriften, die Klopstock, der spätere citoyen français, anlässlich der Französischen Revolution verfasst hat, gehören in diesen Zusammenhang. Beide Bereiche, der des sogenannten heiligen Dichters sowie des patriotischen, politikkritischen, rhetorischen Autors können nicht isoliert gesehen werden. Sie stehen gleichrangig in teils korrespondierender, teils kontroverser Wechselbeziehung.
The Germans of Charleston, Richmond and New Orleans during the Civil War Period, 1850-1870
This work is the first monograph which closely examines the role of the German minority in the American South during the Civil War. In a comparative analysis of German civic leaders, businessmen, militia officers and blockade runners in Charleston, New Orleans and Richmond, it reveals a German immigrant population which not only largely supported slavery, but was also heavily involved in fighting the war. A detailed appendix includes an extensive survey of primary and secondary sources, including tables listing the members of the all-German units in Virginia, South Carolina and Louisiana, with names, place of origin, rank, occupation, income, and number of slaves owned. This book is a highly useful reference work for historians, military scholars and genealogists conducting research on Germans in the American Civil War and the American South.
