Sustainable Development and Innovation in the Energy Sector

Explores how these conflicting scenarios could be reconciled; how can we shape a more sustainable energy system from the existing one; and possible technological progress and innovations to enable a brighter future. Addresses the reality that there exists no consensus on the extent to which innovations can really contribute to reconciling ever-growing energy consumption, availability of resources and the environment, and the structural demands on any energy system. Offers and explains a four-point strategy: Energy should according to its importance regain a top priority in the political arena; higly targeted subsidies should be given for a limited amount of time to speed up the market introduction of energy-efficient and regenerative techniques in analogy to the ‚Dutch model‘; Negotiated agreements and unilateral self-commitments can subsequently ensure further market diffusion of sustainable energy innovations.; the basic research in energy should not be diminished but intensified instead

Nutrition and Malnutrition

The Burg Wartenstein Symposia have become rightly celebrated for achieving their original purpose: to be of service and interest to the anthropological profes sion as a whole and to contribute to related sciences. We are specially grateful to the Board of Directors of the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research for the award of a symposium on Physical Anthropology and Nutritional Status. We had considered that such a subject was timely and that an inter-disciplinary approach would contribute useful knowledge in a most important area--particularly in the field of child health. This pUblication of the proceedings will show the degree of success of these aims. Mrs. Lita Osmundsen, D...

Biological Rhythms and Endocrine Function

These Proceedinqs of the Midwest Conference on Endocrinology and Metabolism are being published by Plenum Press for the first time. Earlier Proceedings in the series Vlere published by the University of Missouri at Columbia. The shift to an internationally recognized pub lisher reflects the considerable growth in stature that the Midwest Con ferences have undergone since their inception nine years ago. Originally concerned only with the endocrinology of the thyroid, the Conferences now explore other endocrine areas. Efforts are made to assemble a panel of speakers selected from different sub-disciplines within endocrinology for the purpose of addressing a common problem. The Ninth Conference...

Heparin

The International Symposium on Heparin, held May 13-15, 1974, in St. Louis, Missouri, as a part of the dedication of the Shoenberg Pavilion of the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis, was conceived as a forum to bring together physicians and scientists with a basic in terest in the structure, function and clinical usefulness of heparin. Few naturally occurring substances have commanded the breadth of interest among members of the biomedical research community as this compound has. Aspects of its covalent and three-dimensional struc ture, its biosynthesis, its interaction with and effect on physio logically important moieties and its use as a therapeutic agent in a variety of disease states have been actively studied for the past several decades. Thus, the present state of these studies seemed to be a timely subject for discussion, not only to gather together in one place representative samples of the myriad of data on heparin but also to underscore the ever increasing necessity for communica tion between basic research and clinical practice.

The Immunoglobulin a System

The International Symposium on the Immunoglobulin A System was organized in observance of the twenty-fifth anni versary of the School of Dentistry of the University of Ala bama in Birmingham. Immunoglobulin A was chosen as the sub ject of the Symposium because of its broad scope in relation to all biologic sciences, as well as for its particular rele vance to prevention of the most common human disease--dental caries. More than 500 scientists, from 13 countries, met in Birmingham, Alabama to review critically past and current research on IgA and to outline goals for integrating future investigations of the many facets of the IgA system. It is our pleasure to express sincere appreciation to t...

Biochemical Pharmacology of Ethanol

A number of excellent symposia, reviews and monographs on the biology of ethanol have been published during the last decade. Al though it may appear that another such publication may be superflu ous, the subject of alcohol abuse is still open for further explora tion and the field of the biochemical pharmacology of ethanol is in its infancy. This is evidenced, for example, by the unavailability of any drugs that are designed specifically for the treatment of alcohol intoxication or alcohol addiction. The impetus for this publication was generated by a spontane ous enthusiasm following the symposium on BiochemicaZ Ph~acoZogy of EthanoZ that was organized at the annual meeting of the American ...

Concanavalin A

Concanavalin A (Con A), a plant lectin, has become an object of extensive research not only for the biochemist, but also for the bi ologist, biophysicist, pathologist, immunologist and others. On April 19-20, 1974 a group of scholars from four continents met on the campus of the University of Oklahoma for an International Symposium on Con A. This volume contains all lectures presented by the invited speakers on this occasion, as well as the abstracts for all shorter technical papers which were presented. Further, the edi tors invited additional contributions from a few selected laboratories to cover the areas not covered in the symposium itself. This volume then reports the present status of...
