Nietzsche and the Dionysian
Nietzsche and the Dionysian argues that the shuddering mania of the affect associated with Dionysus in Nietzsche’s early work runs as a thread through his thought and is linked to an originary interruption of self-consciousness articulated by the philosophical companion. In this capacity, the companion can be considered a ‘mask of Dionysus’, or one who assumes the singular role of the transmitter of the most valuable affirmative affect and initiates a compulsion to respond which incorporates the otherness of the companion. In the context of such engagements, Nietzsche envisages ‘Dionysian’ or divine ‘madness’ within an optics of life, through which an affirmative ethics can be thought. The ethical response to the philosophical companion requires an affirmation of the plurality of life, formulated in the imperatives to be ‘true to the earth’ and ‘become who you are’. Such an ethics, compelled by the Dionysian affect, grounds any future for humanity in the affirmation of the earth and life.

In 1885 Nietzsche insisted that from now on philosophy was only acceptable ‘as the most general form of history, as an attempt somehow to describe Heraclitean becoming and to abbreviate it into signs.’ Taking this remark as a starting point, the aim of this volume is to examine the intricate relationship between Nietzsche’s philosophy of time and his philosophy of history. The questions that arise include: What are the new conceptions of time that Nietzsche has to offer? What kind of historian was Nietzsche himself? What kinds of temporalized histories and historicized philosophies did he write or fail to write? The topic chosen by Nietzsche for his Pforta dissertation was Theognis, his life in Megara, his lyrical production, and his views on the gods, morality and politics. Nietzsche saw Theognis as the intellectual champion of the defeated Megarian aristocracy, who sought to preserve the Dorian spirit and its noble virtues. The interests that guided Nietzsche transcended scientific philology and embraced a concern for the social and political context he adumbrated in the Theognidea. The editors of this volume refer to this novel standpoint as constituting a rudimentary political philology, showing that Theognis’ aristocratism determined and guided Nietzsche’s critique of the moral point of view and his conception of an aristocratic state.
