Wood Production, Wood Technology, and Biotechnological Impacts
In the year 2001, Prof. Dr. Ursula Kües was appointed at the Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology of the Georg-August-University Göttingen to the chair Molecular Wood Biotechnology endowed by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU). Her group studies higher fungi in basic and applied research. Research foci are on mushroom development and on fungal enzymes degrading wood and their applications in wood biotechnology. This book has been edited to thank the DBU for all support given to the chair Molecular Wood Biotechnology. Contributions to the book are from scientists from Göttingen recognised in different fields of forestry and wood science. Chapters presented by members of the group Molecular Wood Biotechnology introduces into their areas of research. The book is designed for interested students of wood biology and wood technology but will also address scientists in the field.

In the past century, anthropogenic activities have increased N input drastically to terrestrial ecosystems and influenced the global N cycle. Especially temperate forest ecosystems are affected in their productivity, species composition, soil chemistry and water quality. N input to forest ecosystems is retained in trees and soil. Excessive N is leached out or released as gases. The retention of N input in soils is mainly influenced by the stability of soil organic matter (SOM). Wald ist ein eigentümliches Eigentum: als ein „Symbol des unendlichen Raumes“ sowie als Projektionsfläche emotionaler Bedürfnisse der Menschen bestimmt es gerade in Deutschland untergründig die politischen Debatten um die je notwendige rechtliche Ausgestaltung des Waldeigentums in Ansehung seiner vielfältigen Funktionen. Zudem prägen die kulturellen und historischen, wirtschaftlichen und rechtlichen sowie ökologischen und politischen Implikationen ebenso wie die Interessen der Waldbesitzer das Spannungsfeld von privaten Eigentumsbefugnissen und legitimen Allgemeinwohlbedürfnissen in spezifischer Weise. Vor diesem Hintergrund vereinigt der Sammelband Beiträge zu den vielfältigen Dimensionen des Waldeigentums und versteht sich als eine breit angelegte wissenschaftliche Selbstvergewisserung der gesellschaftlichen Funktion des Waldes in Deutschland.

Die Veröffentlichung der Vorträge der Tagung "Baum des Jahres 2007 - Die Waldkiefer" in diesem Band gibt einen Überblick über die ökologischen Ansprüche dieser Baumart, ihre Lebensräume und ihre physiologische Anpassungsfähigkeit an sich ändernde Umweltbedingungen. Es werden Empfehlungen für die Praxis zur Anbaueignung, Verjüngung und Bestandespflege der Waldkiefer gegeben sowie die Entwicklung der Holzmärkte, des Einschlages und der Holzpreise aufgezeigt. Eine künstlerische Annäherung an die Waldkiefer rundet die Zusammenstellung der fachlichen Beiträge ab.
