This book, in two volumes, contains an annotated English translation of the História da Ethiópia by the Spanish Jesuit missionary priest Pedro Páez (Pêro Pais in Portuguese), 1564-1622, who worked in the Portuguese padroado missions, first in India and then in Ethiopia, long thought to be the kingdom of the legendary Prester John. His history of Ethiopia was written in Portuguese in the last ten years of his life and survives in only two manuscripts. The translation, by Christopher J. This book, in two volumes, contains the first English translation, with introduction and annotation, of the História da Etiópia by the Spanish Jesuit missionary priest Pedro Páez, 1564-1622, who worked in the Portuguese missions, first in India and then in Ethiopia, long thought to be the kingdom of the legendary Prester John. Paez's learned but often polemical work is a major contribution to the political, social, cultural and religious history of Ethiopia in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, and to the history of early Portuguese and Spanish missions in Africa and India, and West European attempts to come to terms with non-European cultures.
Jesuit Ethos, The
The Jesuit Ethos aims at revisiting important moments in Jesuit history from the margins, and in light of the current global challenges. It argues that by examining Jesuit history from the margins, one better appreciates this history as a spiritual journey, a constant quest for the unity of hearts and minds among the members. Their cultural and political origins, the diversity of their ministries, their apostolic dispersion amid the “First Globalization,” and constant assaults from declared enemies kept the Jesuits on the verge of implosion and immolation and made the unity among their members a matter of survival. By analyzing how the Jesuits exploited their diversity of cultures and politics to build a global ethos, and how this global organization was sustained for the last 500 years, relevant lessons can be learned to address the ongoing challenges of our global community. While speaking to a broader, global-oriented audience, such a history might be the first of such by an African (thus its originality), in a context of shifting demographics in the Church and Society of Jesus, and questions about the identity of its institution and mission.
The Early Modern Jesuit Attitude towards Hindu and Ethiopian Strains of Asceticism
This book presents an early modern Jesuit attitude towards Hindu and Ethiopian strains of asceticism. The Jesuits’ descriptions of both the yogis and the Ethiopian renunciates were marked by ambivalence. While critical of these ascetics, the missionaries also pointed out admirable facets of their comportment. In both the Society of Jesus’ positive and negative impressions, there are glaring ethnocentric views that shift the spotlight onto the other’s flaws. Like many historical cases, these perceptions evolved into a sort of inverted mirror image of the self that revealed differences between the European Catholic and the native renunciate.

Encounters between Jesuits and Protestants in Africa
Protestants entering Africa in the nineteenth century sought to learn from earlier Jesuit presence in Ethiopia and southern Africa. The nineteenth century was itself a century of missionary scramble for Africa during which the Jesuits encountered their Protestant counterparts as both sought to evangelize the African native. Encounters between Jesuits and Protestants in Africa, edited by Robert Alexander Maryks and Festo Mkenda, S.J., presents critical reflections on the nature of those encounters in southern Africa and in Ethiopia, Madagascar, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Fernando Po. Though largely marked by mutual suspicion and outright competition, the encounters also reveal personal appreciations and support across denominational boundaries and thus manifest salient lessons for ecumenical encounters even in our own time. This volume is the result of the second Boston College International Symposium on Jesuit Studies held at the Jesuit Historical Institute in Africa (Nairobi, Kenya) in 2016.
