In this collection, we bring together various disciplines that are critically engaged in reflecting the diverse aspects of digitization in business, politics, ethics, and education. Accordingly, the volume will provide a provocative discourse space, were the key theoretical and practical problems of implementing ethics in digitization will be discussed and assessed. Moreover, we aim to create a bridge between two (hitherto) mostly separate discourses: the ethical discourse of issues of digitization and the discourse on ethical standards and their implementation in the area of business. These discourses are greatly in need of being joined together, since the vast majority of ethical standards in the field of digitization will have to be implemented by companies, not government agencies, NGOs or other non-profit organisations. We believe that this particular selection of articles is a first step towards creating this bridge.

The first half of the book focuses mainly on Japan, especially the ‘3-11’ events: the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the Tohoku area on 11 March 2011 and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant radiation leaks. East and West have long stood as towering edifices dividing history and the world into separate spheres. In fact, the two poles have not only shared a multitude of connections over the centuries, they have also played essential roles in shaping the identities of their oppositional others. Cultural exchange, mutual imaginings, and other forms of interaction have contributed to both the creation of an exotic other and a framing and definition of the self. The essays in this collection explore the creation and transformation of self image through the encounter between East and West from a variety of disciplinary approaches. Scholars from Japan and Europe apply methodologies and concerns from history, literature, art history, aesthetics, sociology, political science, law, and anthropology to issues of identity formation and transformation at the nexus of East Asia and Europe.
The theme arises from the legal-academic movement "Law and Literature". This newly developed field should aim at two major goals, first, to investigate the meaning of law in a social context by questioning how the characters appearing in literary works understand and behave themselves to the law (law in literature), and second, to find out a theoretical solution of the methodological question whether and to what extent the legal text can be interpreted objectively in comparison with the question how literary works should be interpreted (law as literature). The subject of justice and injustice has been covered not only in treatises of law and philosophy, but also in many works of literature: On the one hand, poets and writers have been outraged at the social conditions of their time. On the other hand, some of them have also contributed fundamental reflections on the idea of justice itself.
