This exhibition catalog includes essays by Day's coauthors, who present varied points of view as to whether artists can effectively criticize the existing power structure in society today when they themselves participate as the avant-garde within the same system. The volume represents 28 artists, spanning the pop and minimalist movements to the controversial art of the 1980s. They approach issues of power in diverse ways--at times questioning specific materials or production methods, at other times the literal reference an image projects, and often they are engaged with ideas based on context. These three themes form the configuration of the exhibition, eliciting questions with regard to gender, race, and class attitudes implicit in the visual images.
