Aira the brownie servant girl is more accustomed to wielding a duster than a sword. Yet her father has a vision of her slaying the monstrous kraken that has seized Velmoran; the coastal homeland of the brownies. Aira and her fellow brownies live a broken existence since Velmoran was lost, cursed to do chores for humans in order to survive. Aira longs for a life of peace and freedom for her kind. A chance meeting with Boroden, the charismatic new brownie king who shares Aira's dreams, changes her life forever. Boroden discovers a new homeland for the brownies and Aira travels with him to the Seelie Court to attain the blessing of the powerful sídhe. What she hears there shatters her expectations and sets the brownies on a perilous quest from which only Aira can save them. Will the brownies ever find a homeland for themselves?

Poetry and Apocalypse

In Poetry and Apocalypse, Franke seeks to find the premises for dialogue between cultures, especially religious fundamentalisms—including Islamic fundamentalism—and modern Western secularism. He argues that in order to be genuinely open, dialogue needs to accept possibilities such as religious apocalypse in ways that can be best understood through the experience of poetry. Franke reads Christian epic and prophetic tradition as a secularization of religious revelation that preserves an understanding of the essentially apocalyptic character of truth and its disclosure in history. The usually neglected negative theology that undergirds this apocalyptic tradition provides the key to a radically new view of apocalypse as at once religious and poetic.

This collection of critical essays explores new approaches to the study of avant-garde literature and art, film and architecture. It offers a theoretical framework that avoids narrowly defined notions of the avant-garde. It takes into account the diversity of artistic aims and directions of the various avant-garde movements and encourages a wide and open exploration of the multifaceted and often contradictory nature of the great variety of avant-gardist innovations. Individual essays concentrate on cubist collage and dadaist photomontage, on abstract painting by members of the Dutch group De Stijl, on verbal chemistry and dadaist poetry and on body art from futurism to surrealism. In additio...

Finnegans Wake is a novel by Irish writer James Joyce. It is significant for its experimental style and reputation as one of the most audacious works of fiction in the English language. Written in Paris over a period of seventeen years, and published in 1939, two years before the author's death, Finnegans Wake was Joyce's final work. The book discusses, in an unorthodox fashion, the Earwicker family, comprising the father HCE, the mother ALP, and their three children Shem the Penman, Shaun the Postman, and Issy.

James Joyce's Finnegans Wake is a literary masterpiece that defies conventional description. Published in 1939, this enigmatic novel stands as one of the most complex and challenging works in the English language. Set in a dream-like landscape, Finnegans Wake delves into the subconscious mind, blurring the boundaries between reality and myth, language and music, past and present. At its heart lies the story of the mythical figure of HCE (Here Comes Everybody), his wife ALP (Anna Livia Plurabelle), and their children, as they navigate a world teeming with cryptic allusions, linguistic puzzles, and literary references. Through a kaleidoscopic blend of languages, dialects, and wordplay, Joyce c...
