This book is a history of my father, Giles Holtom's life. He was a member of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps. Giles told me and my brothers these wild, imaginative and exciting stories as children, sitting at the dinner table. I believed them because, well, I was 7 at the time, and he was my dad. It was only in later life, when I retold the stories to other people, that I realised their inherent lack of believability. So it was down to me to investigate the details of his life and the places he visited. He visited 46 countries, before British Airways existed and could take you there. Mostly he got there by walking or hitching, on trains, boats and lorries. Sometimes he rode there on camels, ...

The Gift Of A Child

The Gift Of A Child

Often the birth of a child can prompt parents to turn more intentionally to God. They think about nurturing their child's faith, but soon discover that their children have much to teach them as well. This book will help parents (and grandparents, aunts and uncles) deepen their relationship with God and with their children by providing short reflections based on everyday experiences to which parents of young children can easily relate, such as bath, bed, fears, and food. All parents of young children will easily be able to relate these experiences to their own. Each devotion contains a scripture passage, a reflection based on the authors' experience as parents, questions for reflection, and a prayer. This book was prompted by the tragic death of the Holtom's two-year old son, Lucas, who was killed in a tornado in the summer of 2000. In an effort to capture the memories of their lives with him, they wrote down the many daily activities and experiences they shared, and these form the core of the manuscript. It is not a manuscript for grieving parents, but rather a way for anyone to take the time to celebrate the gift that children are to us.

It's probably the most commonly used symbol of protest in the world, instantly recognised as everywhere as the universal sign for Peace – and in 2008 it will be 50 years old. The book tells the story of the enduring power of what was originally designed as the offical sign for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in England. The symbol was first drawn on on home-made banners and badges in 1958, when CND was launched at a public meeting in London, but has since been apropriated by scores of different protest movements, from hippies in 1960s America – the first to use it to represent 'peace' – to feminists and anarchist punks. In 2008 just as it was 50 years earlier, the CND logo is re-c...
