In medieval times, Holywell was one of the most important centres of pilgrimage in Britain, a role which continued after the Reformation and the persecution of Roman Catholics. By the eighteenth century the town had become probably the most important industrial and commercial centre in north-east Wales. Located close to the Dee estuary, to an area rich in mineral ores and coal, and a plentiful supply of water, it was ideally suited to play a major role in the early days of the Industrial Revolution.
