First International Conference on Credit Analysis and Risk Management

This book provides a summary of state-of-the-art methods and research in the analysis of credit. It thereby supplies very useful insights into this vital area of finance that has previously been insufficiently taught and researched in academia. The book, which includes an overview of processes that are utilized for estimating the probability of default and the loss given default for a wide array of debts, will be useful in evaluating individual loans and bonds as well as managing entire portfolios of such assets. Each of the chapters in the book is written by authors who presented and discussed their contemporary research and knowledge at the First International Conference on Credit Analysis and Risk Management that was held July 21–23, 2011 at Oakland University, Michigan, USA. This collection of writings by these experts in the field is uniquely designed to enhance the understanding of credit analysis in a fashion that permits a broad perspective on the science and art of credit analysis.

From Youthful Manuscripts to River Elegy

The narrative has two parallel lines of development, which constantly interact with each other: the political transformation of China during the critical dozen years 1977-89; and the cultural movement itself. The latter is followed from an abortive attempt in 1982 to publish the minjian journal Youthful Manuscripts, through the blossoming of many popular cultural enterprises, including the potent River Elegy television series, and finally to the Tiananmen tragedy, at which point the two lines of development finally coalesced. The book is filled with details, including the background, character, and personal connections of a large number of people who are related to the movement, which make interesting reading and can be a useful source for further studies.

This is an intellectual biography of Feng Youlan [Fung Yu-lan] (1895-1990), one of the preeminent Chinese philosophers of the 20th century. Feng’s life very well captured the vicissitudes of twentieth-century Chinese politics and scholarship. He made his name in the 1930s and ’40s with a path-breaking approach to Chinese philosophy. And he was one of the few prominent pre-1949 non-Communist Chinese scholars who attempted to influence Chinese society with prolific publications after 1949. This monograph explores Feng Youlan’s work and the trajectory of changes in Feng’s philosophical outlook against the social and political contexts of Feng’s life from the 1920s to 1990. Feng’s search for a framework of Chinese philosophy that is open and connected to foreign learning, and a framework of self-cultivation that is open to outside ideas, continues to be important goals for Chinese philosophy today.

Reconsideration of Science and Technology II

In reviewing and reconsidering the intellectual history of scientism and antiscientism, the authors assess the process of reasoning and prejudices of these contrasting viewpoints, while discussing the repercussions of scientific hegemony and its contemporary criticism. As the second volume of a three-volume set that proposes to reconsider science and technology and explores how the philosophy of science and technology responds to an ever-changing world, this title focuses on ideological trends centering around scientism and anti-scientism since the 19th century. The six chapters look into the emergence of scientism, instrumental reason, scientific optimism, scientific pessimism, scientific c...

Cell Biology

As the techniques of modern molecular biology continue to revolutionize experimental design in cell biology, mathematical modeling and analysis become increasingly necessary and feasible. The papers in this collection expand on invited lectures presented at the Symposium on Some Mathematical Questions in Biology: Cell Biology, held in November 1992 in Denver, Colorado. The work reviewed in the papers demonstrates the power of combining mathematics and experiment to study a number of cell processes, including: protein transport in nerve axons, formation of transport vesicles at the Golgi, molecular motion in cell membranes, cell adhesion, T lymphocyte activation, and cellular responses to receptor aggregation. The volume is an important contribution to the literature, as it introduces mathematicians to a growing application area and cell biologists to new tools and results. The individual articles can be used as readings in a course on mathematical modeling.

Computational Toxicology

A comprehensive analysis of state-of-the-art molecular modeling approaches and strategies applied to risk assessment for pharmaceutical and environmental chemicals This unique volume describes how the interaction of molecules with toxicologically relevant targets can be predicted using computer-based tools utilizing X-ray crystal structures or homology, receptor, pharmacophore, and quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) models of human proteins. It covers the in vitro models used, newer technologies, and regulatory aspects. The book offers a complete systems perspective to risk assessment prediction, discussing experimental and computational approaches in detail, with: * An intr...
