Osmotically driven membrane processes (ODMPs) including forward osmosis (FO) and pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO) have attracted increasing attention in fields such as water treatment, desalination, power generation, and life science. In contrast to pressure-driven membrane processes, e.g., reverse osmosis, which typically employs applied high pressure as driving force, ODMPs take advantages of naturally generated osmotic pressure as the sole source of driving force. In light of this, ODMPs possess many advantages over pressure-driven membrane processes. The advantages include low energy consumption, ease of equipment maintenance, low capital investment, high salt rejection, and high water flux. In the past decade, over 300 academic papers on ODMPs have been published in a variety of application fields. The number of such publications is still rapidly growing. The ODMPs' approach, fabrications, recent development and applications in wastewater treatment, power generation, seawater desalination, and gas absorption are presented in this book.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 21st Annual Conference on Medical Image Understanding and Analysis, MIUA 2017, held in Edinburgh, UK, in July 2017. The 82 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 105 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on retinal imaging, ultrasound imaging, cardiovascular imaging, oncology imaging, mammography image analysis, image enhancement and alignment, modeling and segmentation of preclinical, body and histological imaging, feature detection and classification. The chapters 'Model-Based Correction of Segmentation Errors in Digitised Histological Images' and 'Unsupervised Superpixel-Based Segmentation of Histopathological Images with Consensus Clustering' are open access under a CC BY 4.0 license.
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 28th British National Conference on Databases, BNCOD 28, held in Manchester, UK, in July 2011. The 13 revised full papers, 2 short papers, 2 demo papers and 1 poster paper presented together with the abstracts of 2 keynote talks and 1 tutorial paper were carefully reviewed and selected from 44 submissions. The papers cover a wide range of topics such as XML compression, XML updates, column-oriented stores, provenance, warehousing, streamed data, data mashups, dataspaces, sensor network query processing, and pattern-oriented search.
Water Quality – Science, Assessments and Policy examines many of the scientific issues; national, regional and local assessment practices and results; and national policy issues related to water quality. Chapters focus on three areas: water quality parameters, water quality treatments, and water quality assessments. This book provides a basic understanding of water quality issues and practical examples of their solution.
The Fourth International Working Conference on Statistical and Scientific Data Base Management (IV SSDBM) held on June 21-23, 1988 in Rome, Italy, continued the series of conferences initiated in California in December 1981. The purpose of this conference was to bring together database researchers, users and system builders, working in this specific field, to discuss the particular points of interest, to propose new solutions to the problems of the domain and to expand the topics of the previous conferences, both from the theoretical and from the applicational point of view. The papers of four scientific sessions dealt with the following topics: knowledge base and expert system, data model, ...
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 25th Conference on Medical Image Understanding and Analysis, MIUA 2021, held in July 2021. Due to COVID-19 pandemic the conference was held virtually. The 32 full papers and 8 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 77 submissions. They were organized according to following topical sections: biomarker detection; image registration, and reconstruction; image segmentation; generative models, biomedical simulation and modelling; classification; image enhancement, quality assessment, and data privacy; radiomics, predictive models, and quantitative imaging.
Primary liver cancer (PLC), including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), and other rare tumors, is the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Of all primary liver cancer, HCC is the most common type. Evidence has accumulated that the tumor microenvironment (TME) plays a key role in fostering or restraining tumor development. The tumor microenvironment (TME), which includes molecular, cellular, extracellular matrix(ECM), and vascular signaling pathways, is a complex ecosystem. The interaction between the tumor microenvironment and cancer cells can enhance the malignant properties of tumors, including proliferation, angiogenesis, metastasis, and therapy resistance. In addition, the tumor microenvironment can also lead to abnormal angiogenesis and promote immunosuppression. HCC has been resistant to targeted therapy and immunotherapy. Therefore, further study of the tumor microenvironment of HCC may be helpful for the development of therapeutic methods for HCC.

The contributions of esteemed international experts have covered important research aspects in fission and fusion technologies and naturally occurring radioactive materials management. The authors introduced current and anticipated trends toward better performances and mitigating challenges for commercial application of innovative technologies, biological remediation of mine effluents, nuclear fuel performance in power and research fission reactors, gamma ray spectrometer calibration, and recent advances in understanding the performance of tungsten composite in fusion reactor environment.
Demand for safe and clean water is ever increasing and on the other hand, efforts to recover wasted resources particularly water are also gaining significant importance. Researchers, scientists, innovators, and policymakers throughout the world are investing their time and efforts to build effective and sustainable infrastructure to manage and recover resources from discarded wastes of various states and nature. This book would serve as a guide to researchers, technologists, policymakers as well as students on the various materials stock and methods developed in recent years to address complex pollutants that are difficult to treat or remove with conventional as well as existing water treatment methods.
