This is the report of an international study on hospital utilization in nine regions of eight countries in two continents. This book presents a new method of assessing needs and demands for hospital care. The new method is based on a detailed analysis of hospital utilization by population groups defined by their age, sex, way of life and socio-economic status. It enables both the motivation for demanding hospital care and the actual consumption of such care to be measured. One of the outcomes of the study was to show the corre- lation between the pattern of hospital utilization and the level of socio-economic development.
