Ed van der Elsken
This beautifully illustrated monograph accompanies a full retrospective on the acclaimed Dutch photographer and filmmaker Ed van der Elsken. Known for his unconventional technique and gritty, evocative images of people and places, Ed van der Elsken was a self- taught photographer whose work documented his own life and travels. This book offers a definitive overview of van der Elsken’s entire oeuvre, including his groundbreaking photo novel, Love on the Left Bank and his paean to 1950s Amsterdam, Once Upon a Time. On display at Amsterdam’s famed Stedelijk Museum, the exhibition at the center of this book focuses on the museum’s extensive collection of van der Elsken’s prints, and on the renowned installations he mounted there during his lifetime. Essays reveal the photographer’s early influences, including Weegee, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Robert Capa, while also showing how his confident, unorthodox, and self-expressionist style paved the way for late 20th-century photographers, including Larry Clark, Nan Goldin, and Wolfgang Tillmans.

Rineke Dijkstra
Rineke Dijkstra is renowned for her uncanny and thoughtful portraits series of teenagers and young adults: girls and boys of various nationalities at the beach, children of Bosnian refugees, Spanish bullfighters straight out of the arena, Israeli youngsters before and after military service, and here, documented for the first time, her series of photographs taken of aspiring, young ballet dancers. Her subjects are shown standing, facing the camera, against a minimal background. Formally, the images resemble classical portraiture with their frontally posed figures isolated against minimal backgrounds. Yet, in spite of the uniformity in the photographer's works, there is a marked individuality in each of her subjects. Dijkstra often deals with the development of personality as one moves from adolescence to adulthood, or through a life-changing or potentially threatening experience such as childbirth, or a bullfight. Portraits includes the photographer's new Ballet School series.
Peter Hujar
Peter Hujar, a New Yorker of Ukrainian descent, died of AIDS in 1987. He recorded the world in astonishing portraits of cows, sheep, and geese in the country, dogs in the studio, the sea, the city, and above all his fellow human beings, many of whom have since won fame: Susan Sontag, John Waters, Divine, William S. Borroughs, Candy Darling, Robert Wilson, David Wojnarowicz, Paul Thek, and many men, in the nude, half-dressed, sleeping, posing, tumescent. People, animals, landscapes - Peter Hujar approached them all with great respect and a perfect sense of balance between near and far. His subjects face us with supremely dignified singularity, with loneliness at times, and at times in an aura of dauntless and "splendid isolation".
