Curatorship

Museums and cultural centres play an important role in the re-emergence of cultural autonomy in indigenous societies. The May 1994 symposium, Curatorship: Indigenous Perspectives in Post-Colonial Societies, examined the realignment of relationships between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples of the Commonwealth in the context of traditional museum practices. It supported the right of Indigenous peoples to control the management of their cultural heritage and underlined the need for redefining museum models.

Italian Canadian Heritage

Through a historical and economic analysis of Italian Canadian migration in the second half of the 20th century and through the study of Italian and Canadian archival sources, this book provides an analytic and in-depth tool for the study of the economic and cultural relations between Italy and Canada, from the Golden Age until the present. It focuses, in particular, on the analysis of migratory flows between the two countries, on the evolution of integration, work and assistance problems, and on the promotion of Italian-Canadian culture. The book also retraces the evolution of some relevant non-profit organizations and their role in the enhancement of Italian-Canadian cultural heritage.

Culture & Heritage

Nearly every country deals with the question of how to maintain its cultural identity when "global culture" is washing over the earth. Federal policy is driven by the belief that culture is important to all Canadians & that we need to express our sense of ourselves. Canada's model for cultural affirmation is based on respect for freedom of choice & expression; promoting the creation of Canadian content; maintaining shelf space for Canadian cultural products; developing policies for cultural undertakings; forging partnerships with creators; & preserving our heritage to tell our collective story. This model is applied to all 5 facts of culture & heritage: creation, production, distribution, promotion & conservation. This document looks at current questions in the following cultural industries: broadcasting; film & video; music; publishing; newspapers & magazines; multimedia; the arts; heritage.

A Question of Commitment

A Question of Commitment

In 1991, the Government of Canada ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, requiring governments at all levels to ensure that Canadian laws and practices safeguard the rights of children. A Question of Commitment: Children’s Rights in Canada is the first book to assess the extent to which Canada has fulfilled this commitment. The editors, R. Brian Howe and Katherine Covell, contend that Canada has wavered in its commitment to the rights of children and is ambivalent in the political culture about the principle of children’s rights. A Question of Commitment expands the scope of the editors’ earlier book, The Challenge of Children’s Rights for Canada, by including the voices of specialists in particular fields of children’s rights and by incorporating recent developments.
