Humboldt State University

Perched high atop a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the northernmost campus of the California State University system is celebrating its centennial. The natural environment of forests and oceans provide the perfect setting for hands-on research in forestry, oceanography, wildlife, natural resources, environmental science and resource engineering, and fisheries biology. Begun as a normal school for teacher education, it still provides a full range of credential programs and more than 40 majors for undergraduate and master's degrees in 14 areas, and it is a regional center for the arts. The university is at the forefront of studies on sustainability, green living, and environmental responsibility.

This book discusses the philosophy and educational reforms initiated by Wilhelm von Humboldt as well as their legacy in the modern university system. It begins with a discussion of the history of the university from antiquity and the Middle Ages through the era of Humboldt’s reforms and its remnants in and implications for the present day. The authors then delve into policy, outlining the key conflicts that have informed the development of university educational policy, such as the clash between academia and professional education, the coordination of public administration and educational institutions, and the perennial issue of funding. Humboldt’s ideas are then discussed within an econ...

Youth Educational Services is more than just an easily acronymed program title. It's a piece of Humboldt State University history. What started as an off-the-cuff idea between two faculty members has grown into a formidable force on campus and the community. Y.E.S. supports student-initiated, student-led volunteer programs that serve local community needs. By creating a collaborative, inclusive and safe environment, Y.E.S. volunteers become active creators of their own learning by exploring new ideas, developing leadership, connecting deeply with their peers and those they serve, and building meaning through reflection. Through the years, over 5,000 volunteers and thousands of community members have benefited from Y.E.S. programs. These are the threads that weave together the contributions of five decades of Y.E.S. community members, a quilt created by hands and hearts of all ages. This book honors all the voices and perspectives shared, and those yet to be shared, that together form the powerful legacy of Y.E.S.

The IdeaFest Journal showcases the research of stu¬dents, faculty, and staff of Humboldt State Uni-versity. We are guided by the belief that publishing is an important aspect of higher education that shouldn't be limited by exorbitant publishing costs. The journal extended from Humboldt State Uni-versity's ideaFest, a day-long event celebrating the collaborative research and creative projects of the HSU community. While the event is an awesome opportunity to communicate research and projects, we wanted to provide a pathway to convert a day-long experience into a permanent mark on the ac¬ademic community through publication. The journal is open to any type of research, from anthropology to zoology. Research can be any¬where from independent projects, to group collab¬orations, from scientific research to creative works. The main goal of ideaFest Journal is to ensure that if there is someone out there in the HSU commu¬nity willing to publish their work, we can provide the way.
