Tradisionalisme dan Modernisme Islam di Indonesia
Realitas islam di Indonesia mengalami interaksi dengan sistem sosial dan kebudayaan setempat. Agama dan tradisi berkolaborasi menjalin sinergi yang sangat rapi. Dalam tahap tertentu, sinergi tersebut terkadang menimbulkan problem tersendiri, yaitu samarnya batas antara Islam dan tradisi, sehingga sulit dibedakan mana Islam otentik dan mana Islam yang mentradisi. Tetapi, hal itu menunjukkan realitas keagamaan yang dinamis. Fenomena tersebut menjadikan kultur pemikiran dan aksi Islam Indonesia sangat beragam. Keragaman itu terjadi baik pada level personal maupun kelompok. Haji Ahmad Sanusi merupakan salah seorang tokoh yang mengisi keragaman pemikiran tersebut. Ia mendalami Islam dari sumbernya dan melakukan kontekstualisasi dalam kehidupan masyarakat. Kesadarannya mendialogkan antara doktrin agama, tradisi, dan semangat pembaruan, membuatnya menjadi seorang pemikir agama yang eklektik.

Sosok kharismatik ajengan Cipasung Tasimalaya yang dibedah biografinya dalam buku ini tak lain adalah sosok resi yang telah mensenyawakan dirinya dan mentalitas spiritualitas Islam secara natural dengan mentalitas budaya Sundanya di Cipasung. Dia bernama KH Moh Iyas Ruhiat. Totalitas perjuangan Ajengan Ilyas dalam NU sangatlah besar dan dikagumi warga NU. Tidak hanya warga NU, tetapi seluruh bangsa. Karena di Jawa Barat beliau juga sering memelopori dialog lintas agama dan linta sektoral. Beliau selalu menggandeng Muhammadiyah dalam persoalan umat Islam. dalam pluralitas keberagamaan, beliau selalu menggendeng para pemuka agama Indonesia, termasuk ikut masuk dan berceramah di pesantrennya. Walaupun demikian, beliau tetap santun dan rendah diri. Menduduki posisi tertinggi di NU, beliau tetap tinggal di Cipasung. Karena baginya, Ilyas dan Cipasung bagai biji yang tumbuh ditanahnya sendiri.
Varieties of Religious Authority
The twentieth century was a fascinating period of profound political, social and economic changes in Indonesia. These changes contributed to the diversification of the religious landscape and as a result, religious authority was redistributed over an increasing number of actors. Although many Muslims in Indonesia continued to regard the ulama, the traditional religious scholars, as the principle source of religious guidance, religious authority has become more diffused and differentiated over time. The present book consists of contributions which all deal with the multi-facetted and multidimensional topic of religious authority and aim to complement each other. Most papers deal with Indonesia, but two dealing with other countries have been included in order to add a comparative dimension. Amongst the topics dealt with are the different and changing roles of the ulama, the rise and role of Muslim organizations, developments within Islamic education, like the madrasa, and the spread of Salafi ideas in contemporary Indonesia.
