Exhibition: Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden (24 januari 2015 - 12 april 2015).

This monograph is an interdisciplinary study of the concept of 'fragment' in literature and in critical and literary theory. It discusses the fragment's performativity and function within a historical perspective, stretching from Heraclitus, via the German Romantics and European writers of the Modernist period, to American postmodern manifestations of the fragment. This is the first history of the fragment to appear in English, and it is also the first attempt at producing a consistent taxonomy of literary and critical fragments. The fragments are categorised according to function, not author intention, and the study addresses a number of questions: What constitutes the fragment, when the fr...

The Bloomsbury Companion to Heidegger

Martin Heidegger is one of the twentieth century's most important philosophers, and now also one of the most contentious as revelations of the extent of his Nazism continue to surface. His ground-breaking works have had a hugely significant impact on contemporary thought through their reception, appropriation and critique. His thought has influenced philosophers as diverse as Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, Arendt, Adorno, Gadamer, Levinas, Derrida and Foucault, among others. In addition to his formative role in philosophical movements such as phenomenology, hermeneutics and existentialism, structuralism and post-structuralism, deconstruction and post-modernism, Heidegger has had a transformative eff...

Critique

Critic and theorist Rita Roos (1956-1996) grew up a member of Finland's indigenous Swedish-speaking minority, a population of 350,000 with a strong writing culture. When she died in her fortieth year, she left behind the essays and interviews collected here, edited on the tenth anniversary of her passing by Anders Kruger and by her twin sister, the painter Nina Roos. Rita Roos's work for Helsinki's "Hufvudstadtbladet" newspaper and for "Siksi: the Nordic Art Review," for which she was the Finnish editor, document a lively local art scene and also range over the international art world to include coverage of work by Gerhard Richter, Anish Kapoor, Rosemarie Trockel, Louise Lawler, Cindy Sherman, Laurie Simmons, and Damien Hirst. This volume is published not only as a tribute to a vibrant, committed art writer, but, as the editors write, as "an example of what journalism can be. In that sense this book can be understood as obliquely polemical in relation to the current debate about the function and quality of criticism." Roos herself asks in an interview here, "What can art say that science cannot?" and answers that question, along with many more.

The meagre materials contrast with the richness suggested in their multiplicity. An almost exalted merging of materials including textile scraps, coloured and dyed paper, sheets of painted paper and bits of labels and fragments torn out of Italian Vogue, perhaps a few seemingly forgotten chalk stumps.[Bokinfo].
