Bajo un aura de juventud, preparación y solvencia, encabezó lo que muchos consideraban el inconcebible regreso del PRI a la Presidencia de la República, para, llegado el momento, dejar el poder en medio de una repulsa generalizada. De “salvador”, como lo llamaría la prensa extranjera, poco a poco fue perdiendo popularidad hasta volverse uno de los gobernantes peor evaluados por los sondeos de opinión. La efectiva e idílica imagen mediática que le fue construida, reforzada con un matrimonio de telenovela, terminó por no resistir los golpes de la realidad, dando lugar a un gobierno cargado de escándalos e insuficiencias.
