Knowledge and Language
How do people represent their knowledge about the world and use that knowledge for communication? This question is the central theme of this book. Among the aspects discussed in the first three sections are: the relationship between formal, logical descriptions of language, and psychological analyses of language use; how knowledge interacts with language use; and childrens' acquisition of language in different countries. In the last two sections, the topics discussed include the complex relationships between the development, transmission, and comprehension of intention and meaning, the growth of the representation of social knowledge, and the impact acquiring a language (or two languages) has on the development of the child's knowledge structures.
A Case for Psycholinguistic Cases
This volume comprises ten papers presented as plenary lectures on the occasion of the Second World Congress of the International Society of Applied Psycholinguistics (ISAPL) at the University of Kassel, Germany, from July 27 31, 1987. The articles collected in this volume focus on the production, comprehension, and acquisition of languages from various empirical and theoretical points of view. This volume is case-based in that it does not claim to cover the full range of present-day psycholinguistic enquiry. It attempts, though, to make a case out of a representational variety of psycholinguistic phenomena, which might provide a window on a unified theory of language production, comprehension, and acquisition. From this perspective this volume aims at the presentation and discussion of various cases which, through analogical reasoning, may serve to shed light on and to solve new cases.

Language Processing in Chinese
The aim of this book is to integrate the most recent research in the cognitive aspects of the Chinese language into a single academic reference for those interested in language processing and related fields. Chinese is perhaps the most widely used language in the world. In addition to its popularity, many specific features make it unique in relation to many Indo-European languages. Chinese words generally do not have inflections indicating grammatical attributes such as number, gender and case for nouns, or tense and aspect for verbs. Chinese words have no inherently marked lexical categories. Unlike the alphabetic symbols common to Indo-European languages, the Chinese writing system is logographic in nature. Chinese script/speech relationship is highly opaque, with the Chinese characters representing lexical morphemes in contrast to alphabetic symbols which represent phonemes. This volume presents research findings indispensable to the general understanding of human language processing about how people process the Chinese language.
