Dulwich Picture Gallery was founded in 1811. It was England's first purpose-built public art gallery, designed by the period's greatest architect, Sir John Soane. Its founders, Noel Desenfans, Francis Bourgeois and Margaret Desenfans, lie to this day in the beautiful Mausoleum at the heart of the Gallery. The collection makes this remarkable and picturesque place one of the glories of Europe - Rembrandt, Rubens, Canaletto, Poussin, Gainsborough, Hogarth, Reni, Guercino, Raphael, Tiepolo, amongst many other famous names, are all represented by masterpieces here. Ian Dejardin, the Gallery's Director, has chosen, out of this extraordinary parade of riches, a selection of the paintings that speak to him particularly. They include masterpieces famous the world over, a few less well-known gems and some surprises. AUTHOR: Ian Dejardin has had a long career in museums, working as Curator for the Royal Academy of Arts, English Heritage and Dulwich Picture Gallery, which he joined in 1998. He was appointed the Gallery's Director in 2005. 68 colour illustrations

The first major retrospective of the last member to join the Group of Seven, L.L. Fitzgerald Into the Light: The Art of Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald, is a comprehensive and diverse examination of the impact and lasting influence of Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald, the last member of the Group of Seven, joining in 1932, and the only member to live in western Canada. Co-curated by Sarah Milroy, Chief Curator and Ian A.C. Dejardin, Executive Director of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, the exhibition will present more than 200 paintings, drawings and prints, in partnership with the Winnipeg Art Gallery. This scholarly publication will examine the artists' practice and inspirations through a selection of the exhibition works and essay contributions by the curators, Winnipeg Art Gallery Chief Curator Andrew Kear, artists Pierre Dorion, Robert Houle and Wanda Koop, writer Robert Enright and prominent Canadian art historians Michael Parke-Taylor and Dr. Oliver A.I. David Milne

  • Categories: Art

This beautifully illustrated book documents the life and work of David Milne (1882-1953), one of Canada's greatest modern painters whose vast body of work shows him to be an artist of true originality and vision. Like the members of the Group of Seven, Milne primarily chose landscape as his subject matter. However, his true subject was the process of perception and representation, reducing his painting to its essentials and infusing it with his own distinctive modern sensibility. The book presents an account of one man's spiritual and emotional voyage into modernity - from the bustling sidewalks of New York to the war-torn landscapes of northern France and back to rural Canada. With more than one hundred works in oil and watercolour, this publication provides an appreciation of one of Canada's most sophisticated modern painters.

A Like Vision is a lavish celebration of the legacy of Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, Canada's canonical landscape painters. The Group's depiction of the rugged beauty of the Canadian landscape -- from the coastal mountains of British Columbia to the north shore of Lake Superior, the villages of rural Quebec, and the rocky, windswept coves of Newfoundland -- charged Canadians to experience their country in a bold new light and changed the face of Canadian art forever. Through their vigorous and expressive painterly style and vibrant colours, the Group of Seven significantly contributed to Canada's sense of autonomy and identity as a modern state in the aftermath of the First World War. ...

This accompanying publication beautifully showcases the oil paintings, photographs, ceramics, fabrics, decorative screens and works on paper in a stunning display of Vanessa Bell's vibrant and wide-ranging talent. Long overshadowed by the complexity of her family life and romantic entanglements, the editors assess Bell in the context of her relationship with sister, Virginia Woolf, and as muse and confidant to Roger Fry and Duncan Grant but ultimately present an intrepid artist deserving of fresh consideration.

The Group of Seven and Tom Thomson

  • Categories: Art

This book celebrates the artisitic legacy of eleven artists who broke with tradition and established a new way of painting Canada. Although they called themselves the Group of Seven, the members eventually numbered ten. Tom Thompson, who died before the group was established, was always present in spirit and in the public mind--Page 4 of cover.
