The Thesis and the Book

The academic caveat Publish or Perish is not a new one, and for over a quarter of a century, The Thesis and the Book has come to the aid of graduate students in their quest for publication. The doctoral dissertation, usually the first book-length study completed by a scholar, is, however, only rarely publishable as a book. Understanding the differences between the two forms is a crucial part of one's education as a scholar and is equally important in appreciating the endeavours of scholarly publishers. The Thesis and the Book: A Guide for First-Time Academic Authors, revised and expanded in this second edition, will continue to provide the best overview of the process of revising a dissertat...

The Thesis and the Book

The thesis or dissertation, prepared as part of a program of graduate studies, is only rarely publishable as a book. The differences between the two forms of presentation are described in this volume, and advice is given on how a thesis may be revised for eventual publication. The authors of the separate chapters are editors, publishers, and scholars: Francess G. Halpenny, Henri Peyre, Robert Plant Armstrong, William W. Savage, Jr, William C. Dowling, and Olive Holmes. Their topic matter ranges from broad questions of purpose and style, to detailed practical suggestions for rewriting. In passing, the existing approach to dissertations in graduate studies is criticized and defended. The chapters have previously appeared as articles in Scholarly Publishing.. A Journal for Authors and Publishers, and are gathered here in view of the importance of the topic. The volume will be of value to any graduate student or recent PHD seeking publication, and to faculty members supervising graduate students.

An Introduction to Publishing Management

An Introduction to Publishing Management

A first-class source of informtation and guidance, and highly suitable also for teaching purposes. With the liberalisation of textbook publishing policies in much of Africa and the increasing integration of the private sector in the supply of textbooks to government-financed schools, great possibilities are opening for the development of indigenous publishing industries. This introduction to publishing management is by a highly respected publishing practitioner and theorist. He sets out the basics of efficient, economical and prudent management of time and money in publishing, with a view to equipping African publishers with techniques that will contribute to success, whether they are tendering for contracts or competing in a completely open market. While much of the emphasis is on textbooks, the principles apply to all types of publishing, and to most countries of the world. The premise is that managers need not be skilled in every area of publishing, but do need to know enough about each area to ask the right questions about strategies, costs and cost recovery.

Cold Iron and Lady Godiva

The Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto is celebrating its 100th anniversary. This informal volume concentrates on the last half century. It examines the development of the Faculty and of its undergraduate and alumni organizations; the changing undergraduate scene since 1920, through a depression, the return of soldiers to university after two world wars, and the tempestuous sixties; the impact that the teaching staff and graduates of this one engineering school have had on their community and their nation through research and practice (including pioneer work in energy, transportation, construction, and industry); and ends with a look into the future of engineering education by the retiring dean of the Faculty, James M. Ham.
