Visitors to the island of Bali are often overwhelmed by the abundance and variety of paintings they encounter. But what is a typical Balinese painting? In this book, newly updated and with new illustrations, the author examines the religious and social values and techniques of painting that constitute the Balinese style, and then describes the intriguing period of transition in which Balinese art finds itself today, torn between the demands for mass production for the tourist trade and the desire to preserve in traditional paintings Bali as the "last paradise."
"Messages, Signs, and Meanings can be used directly in introductory courses in semiotics, communications, media, or culture studies. Additionally, it can be used as a complementary or supplementary text in courses dealing with cognate areas of investigation (psychology, mythology, education, literary studies, anthropology, linguistics). The text builds upon what readers already know intuitively about signs, and then leads them to think critically about the world in which they live - a world saturated with images of all kinds that a basic knowledge of semiotics can help filter and deconstruct. The text also provides opportunities for readers to do "hands-on" semiotics through the exercises an...
This work constitutes the first book-length examination of Balinese kinship in English and an important theoretical analysis of the central ethnographic concept of "kinship system." Bali is a place that, for almost a century, has inspired people to come, to be 'elsewhere' and yet, feel at home. Beauty of landscapes, extraordinary culture, and a warm welcome—Bali has it all, and more. Bali Inspires explores Balinese art, past and present, as seen through the lens of the Rudana family and their deep, abiding love of Bali. Featuring art pulled from Museum Rudana, the Rudana Fine Art Gallery and the Rudana family's private collection, this book is an extraordinary glimpse into the heart of Bali.
Covering the earliest Sanskrit rulebooks through to the codification of 'Hindu law' in modern times, this interdisciplinary volume examines the interactions between Hinduism and the law. The authors present the major transformations to India's legal system in both the colonial and post colonial periods and their relation to recent changes in Hinduism. Thematic studies show how law and Hinduism relate and interact in areas such as ritual, logic, politics, and literature, offering a broad coverage of South Asia's contributions to religion and law at the intersection of society, politics and culture. In doing so, the authors build on previous treatments of Hindu law as a purely text-based tradition, and in the process, provide a fascinating account of an often neglected social and political history.
This book provides new data and perspectives on the development of 'world religion' in post-colonial societies through an analysis of the development of 'Hinduism' in various parts of Indonesia from the early twentieth century to the present. This development has been largely driven by the religious and cultural policy of the Indonesian central government, although the process began during the colonial period as an indigenous response to the introduction of modernity.
