Remembering Communism
Remembering Communism examines the formation and transformation of the memory of communism in the post-communist period. The majority of the articles focus on memory practices in the post-Stalinist era in Bulgaria and Romania, with occasional references to the cases of Poland and the GDR. Based on an interdisciplinary approach, including history, anthropology, cultural studies and sociology, the volume examines the mechanisms and processes that influence, determine and mint the private and public memory of communism in the post-1989 era. The common denominator to all essays is the emphasis on the process of remembering in the present, and the modalities by means of which the present perspective shapes processes of remembering, including practices of commemoration and representation of the past. The volume deals with eight major thematic blocks revisiting specific practices in communism such as popular culture and everyday life, childhood, labor, the secret police, and the perception of “the system”.

Recalling Fieldwork
The volume addresses reflections on the social conditions in which anthropological research in Eastern European countries under and after socialism was conducted. Methodological commonalities and differences for anthropologists coming from specific academic traditions and political contexts are revealed through fresh reflections on the everyday fieldwork. Institutional settings of the 70s and 80s, challenges in entering the field or engagement with the needs and desires of the studied subjects come out of this web of reflections. While some authors recall fieldwork based in single countries, others recall journeys though multi-sited ethnographies. Raluca Mateoc is postdoctoral researcher in Social Anthropology at the University of Fribourg and at the University of Geneva. François Rüegg is Emeritus Professor of the Institute of Social Anthropology of the University of Fribourg.
Balkan Blues
Balkan Blues explores how a state transitions from the collectivized production and distribution of socialism to the consumer-focused culture of capitalism. Yuson Jung considers the state as an economic agent in upholding rights and responsibilities in the shift to a global market. Taking Bulgaria as her focus, Jung shows how impoverished Bulgarians developed a consumer-oriented society and how the concept of "need" adapted in surprising ways to accommodate this new culture. Different legal frameworks arose to ensure the rights of vulnerable or deceived consumers. Consumer advocacy NGOs and government officers scrambled to navigate unfamiliar EU-imposed models for consumer affairs departments. All of these changes involved issues of responsibility, accountability, and civic engagement, which brought Bulgarians new ways of viewing both their identities and their sense of agency. Yet these opportunities also raised questions of inequality, injustice, and social stratification. Jung's study provides a compelling argument for reconsidering of the role of the state in the construction of 21st-century consumer cultures.

Narratives Unbound
The first work that covers the post-Communist development of historical studies in six Eastern European countries: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia. A uniquely critical and qualitative analysis from a comparative and critical perspective, written by scholars from the region itself. Focusing on the first post-Communist decade, 1989–1999, the book offers a longer-term perspective that includes the immediate 'prehistory' of that momentous decade as well as its 'posthistoire'. The authors capture the spirit of 1989, that heady mix of elation, surprise, determination, and hope: l'ivresse du possible. This was the paradoxical beginning of Eastern European post-Communism: ushered in by 'anti-Utopian' revolutions, and slowly finding its course towards a bureaucratic, imitative, challenging, and anachronistic restoration of a capitalism that had changed almost beyond recognition when it had mutated into the negative double of Communism. Fillers and Filled Polymers
With the increasing recognition of the importance of fillers for reinforcing and enhancing polymer properties, current research is progressing rapidly. This volume of Macromolecular Symposia presents highlights of the Eurofillers'99 conference held in Lyon, France, September 6-9, 1999. Recent research furthering our understanding of the properties and processing of fillers and their interactions with polymers was presented, along with new ideas addressing the need for filled polymers with combinations of varied properties. The possibilities presented by nanotechnology were also introduced through contributions concerning investigations into nanofillers, such as clays and whiskers, and nanocomposites.
