This is the translation from the Japanese textbook for the grade 10 course, "Basic Mathematics". The book covers the material which is a compulsory for Japanese high school students. The course comprises algebra (including quadratic functions, equations, and inequalities), trigonometric functions, and plane coordinate geometry.
This book is dedicated to the memory of Mikael Passare, an outstanding Swedish mathematician who devoted his life to developing the theory of analytic functions in several complex variables and exploring geometric ideas first-hand. It includes several papers describing Mikael’s life as well as his contributions to mathematics, written by friends of Mikael’s who share his attitude and passion for science. A major section of the book presents original research articles that further develop Mikael’s ideas and which were written by his former students and co-authors. All these mathematicians work at the interface of analysis and geometry, and Mikael’s impact on their research cannot be underestimated. Most of the contributors were invited speakers at the conference organized at Stockholm University in his honor. This book is an attempt to express our gratitude towards this great mathematician, who left us full of energy and new creative mathematical ideas.
This volume is dedicated to the memory of the Russian mathematician, V.A. Rokhlin (1919-1984). It is a collection of research papers written by his former students and followers, who are now experts in their fields. The topics in this volume include topology (the Morse-Novikov theory, spin bordisms in dimension 6, and skein modules of links), real algebraic geometry (real algebraic curves, plane algebraic surfaces, algebraic links, and complex orientations), dynamics (ergodicity, amenability, and random bundle transformations), geometry of Riemannian manifolds, theory of Teichmuller spaces, measure theory, etc. The book also includes a biography of Rokhlin by Vershik and two articles which should prove of historical interest.
This is the first of three volumes originated from a series of lectures in mathematics given by professors of Kyoto University in Japan for high school students. The main purpose of the lectures was to show the listeners the beauty and liveliness of mathematics using the material that is accessible to people with little preliminary knowledge. The first chapter of the book talks about the geometry and topology of surfaces. Among other topics the authors discuss the Poincar‚?Hopf theorem about critical points of vector fields on surfaces and the Gauss?Bonnet theorem about the relation between the curvature and topology (Euler characteristics). The second chapter addresses various aspects of the concept of dimension, including the Peano curve and the Poincar‚ approach to dimension. It also discusses the structure of three-dimensional manifolds, proving, in particular, that the three-dimensional sphere is the union of two doughnuts.
This volume is a collection of refereed expository and research articles in discrete and computational geometry written by leaders in the field. Articles are based on invited talks presented at the AMS-IMS-SIAM Summer Research Conference, "Discrete and Computational Geometry: Ten Years Later", held in 1996 at Mt. Holyoke College (So.Hadley, MA). Topics addressed range from tilings, polyhedra, and arrangements to computational topology and visibility problems. Included are papers on the interaction between real algebraic geometry and discrete and computational geometry, as well as on linear programming and geometric discrepancy theory.
This book contains the proceedings of the Real Algebraic Geometry-Topology Conference, held at Michigan State University in December 1993. The goal of this book is to explain, at the graduate student level, connections between tropical geometry and optimization. Building bridges between these two subject areas is fruitful in two ways. Through tropical geometry optimization algorithms become applicable to questions in algebraic geometry. Conversely, looking at topics in optimization through the tropical geometry lens adds an additional layer of structure. The author covers contemporary research topics that are relevant for applications such as phylogenetics, neural networks, combinatorial auctions, game theory, and computational complexity. This self-contained book grew out of several courses given at Technische Universität Berlin and elsewhere, and the main prerequisite for the reader is a basic knowledge in polytope theory. It contains a good number of exercises, many examples, beautiful figures, as well as explicit tools for computations using $texttt{polymake}$.
