Smart sustainable mobility ecosystems promise to address society’s expectation of environmentally friendly on-demand mobility. While the technology stack to build such ecosystems is just around the corner in the form of connected, automated, and electric vehicles, strategies to deploy and operate such fleets in a coordinated manner must still be advanced. Most of such optimization challenges highly depend on the nature of customer demand, vehicle supply, and environmental influences. Hence, this dissertation investigates how available data streams from mobility ecosystems can be leveraged in Information Systems to solve related decision problems. The overarching goal of this work is to gen...
The Internet’s emergence has significantly changed how people, communities, and societies behave, interact, and live. Today, people are accustomed to fulfilling their needs by taking advantage of giant online places for, e.g., the exchange of goods, video streaming, or social interaction. A driving force within this powerful development is represented by the growing diffusion of digital technologies. Enabled by technological advances, nearly every artifact is or can be equipped with digital technologies. With the increasing digitization and hybridization of physical objects established innovation and value commercialization logics are brought into question. Recapitulating today’s promine...
Although electric vehicles (EVs) are theoretically capable of emissions-free driving, their market penetration is still pending, which is reflected in their low sales numbers. This is mainly due to three major barriers to the widespread adoption of these vehicles, with one of them being their limited average driving distance. Although the limited range of these cars would theoretically be sufficient to match the usage patterns of most drivers, they are generally unwilling to accept it. In this regard, users often report serious concerns about not reaching their planned destinations due to battery depletion, which is commonly referred to as range anxiety. Within this cumulative dissertation, ...
This book outlines an integrative framework for business-model innovation in the paradigm of the Internet of Things. It elaborates several tools and methodologies for the quantitative, qualitative, analytical and effectual evaluation, and analyzes their applicability and efficiency for several phases of the business-model innovation process. As such, it provides guidance to managers, decision-makers and entrepreneurs on how to systematically employ the business-model concept with the aim of achieving sustainable competitive advantages. For researchers the book introduces cases and examples for successful business-model innovation and presents an integrated approach to the methods and tools applied.
In this work, an extension of the federated averaging algorithm, FedAvg-Gaussian, is applied to train probabilistic neural networks. The performance advantage of probabilistic prediction models is demonstrated and it is shown that federated learning can improve driving range prediction. Using probabilistic predictions, routing and charge planning based on destination attainability can be applied. Furthermore, it is shown that probabilistic predictions lead to reduced travel time.
The widespread diffusion of digital, connected objects such as smartphones or tablets as well as the increasing integration of computing and connectivity capabilities into everyday artifacts like TVs and cars have significantly changed individual behavior in recent decades: it has become the norm to interact with technology and to be connected with online resources regardless of time and place. Social interactions have increasingly become intertwined with technology, making it almost impossible to fully participate in everyday life activities without IT. As a final example, with the integration of network connectivity, digital technologies, products, and services are not used in isolation an...
The first part of this cumulative dissertation is divided into two chapters. The first chapter describes the motivation for studying the topic of this thesis, outlines the research gaps and research questions, illustrates the structure, presents the research design, and describes the anticipated contributions. The second chapter provides the relevant theoretical background.
