Writing Europe
What do we mean by Europe? Thirty-three renowned authors from 33 European countries attempt an answer-in serious, ironic, skeptical, or optimistic tones. Their essays, written for the symposium held at the Literaturhaus Hamburg in 2003, reflect the astonishing diversity of European cultures. Not only are the style and experience of the individual authors remarkable for their distinctiveness, but their perspectives and views also appear to have little in common-at first glance.
Transitions
This volume introduces ten emerging voices in German-language literature by women. Their texts speak to the diverse modalities of transition that characterise society and culture in the twenty-first century, such as the adaptation to evolving political and social conditions in a newly united Germany; globalisation, the dissolution of borders, and the changing face of Europe; dramatic shifts in the meaning of national, ethnic, sexual, gender, religious, and class identities; rapid technological advancement and the revolutionary power of new media, which in turn have radically altered the connections between public and private, personal and political. In their literature, the authors presented here reflect on the notion of transition and offer some unique interventions on its meaning in the contemporary era.
Violence, Culture and Identity
This volume contains selected papers given at the conference 'Violence, Culture and Identity' held at St Andrews University in 2003. It contributes to the debate on the role of culture in propagating, mediating and controlling violence in society, concentrating on the relationship between culture and identity-formation in Germany and Austria from the Middle Ages to the present. Bringing together the work of twenty-two scholars with expertise in different literary and historical periods, the volume probes the complexities of representations of violence enacted and suffered, of affirmative and non-affirmative violence in text and visual form, revealing the often blurred line between victim and victimizer. Violence in its discursive and material forms is investigated, using the theoretical tools of sociology, post-colonial and gender studies, history and psychology as well as of literary criticism. The collection of essays focuses particularly on the relationship between war and identity, on 1970s terrorism and identity, on violence and the construction of gender, and on contemporary writing in German.

Role of Media in Nation Building
The concept of nation building is a multi-dimensional process, addressing various components simultaneously. It takes into account the various historical and geographical perspectives of the country in question, noting the peculiarities and diversity of its cultural ethos, including its social, economic and political structures. This volume addresses these inter-linked aspects, and the innovative development of these structures and institutions. However, such changes and development must be directed to create a more culturally homogenous and productive society, so that basic human needs like food, shelter, healthcare and education are fulfilled at the optimum level. All-round development and growth for the nation can be achieved only with a robust economy and political stability. As such, the process of nation building and development is a multifaceted phenomenon. In the context of India, this process is associated with the central values embodied in the preamble of the country’s constitution, which advocates for the establishment of secular, socialist and democratic society based on well-defined fundamental rights. This anthology reflects these academic spirits and vistas.
