This dissertation examines mission museums established by Catholic mission congregations in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland from the 1890s onwards. The aim is to provide the first extensive study on these museums in a way that contributes to current blind spots in mission history, and the history of anthropology and museology. In this study I use Angela Jannelli's concept of small-scale and amateurish museums to create a framework in order to characterise the museums. Christians form the third largest religious community in India. How has this come about? There are many studies of separate groups: but there has so far been no major history of the three large groups - Roman Catholic, Protestant and Thomas Christians (Syrians). This work attempts to meet the need for such a history. It goes right back to the beginning and traces the story through the ups and downs of at least fifteen centuries. It includes careful studies of the political and social background and of the non-Christian reactions to the Christian message. The narration is non-technical and should present few difficulties to the thoughtful reader; the more technical matters are dealt with in notes and appendices. This book will be of interest to all students of Church History and will also prove fascinating to many who are concerned with the development of Christianity as a world religion and in the dialogue between different forms of faith.
"This book is one of the first to present a definitive history of the Christian Ashram movement. It offers insights into the development of the movement, on Europe's Orientalist view of Eastern mysticism, and how the concept of the 'ashram' spread beyond the borders of India. Drawing extensively from ashram literature and the author's field research, the book critically analyses the notions of inculturation in the encounter between Christianity and Hindu spirituality and ritualism. It looks at how the movement grew out of the colonial encounter and how it evolved through the years which were contingent on developments within Christian churches outside India. The volume also discusses the reinterpretation of the idea of the 'ashram' by Christian theologians, the introduction of elite Brahmanical concepts within the movement, and the unique theological perspectives which were nurtured in these ashrams. This book investigates Luke's message of salvation in relation to socio-economic issues, and thus concerns salvation of the rich as well as the poor. With a narrative reading of Luke's Gospel built on careful examination of its socio-economic context, it demonstrates that Luke's message of salvation is best understood as: 1) Divine mercy which champions the cause of the poor and redresses the injustice of the world, 2) Its human embodiment, and 3) Divine reward promised to those who enact mercy. Wi argues that Luke's question of 'what must we do?' juxtaposes salvation with 'doing', posing interesting questions with respect to the salvation of the rich. This volume highlights good news to the poor in terms of divine mercy and justice, shows that the reception of divine mercy calls for practices, which embody it, and above all clarifies Luke's notion of salvation of the rich which will happen as participation in the salvation of the poor. Wi's conclusion challenges its readers by asking the question along with Luke's audience: What must we do?
