Higher Education and Technological Acceleration
This book critically examines the relationship between new media technologies, research ethics, and pedagogical strategies within the contemporary university. It debates whether recent transformations of higher education, rather than an effect of neo-liberalization, are actually an outflow of the technological acceleration of the university's own contradictory ideals around knowledge and democracy. The book sets up this argument by likening the university to a "vision machine" which quest for total scientific and social transparency has recently caved in on itself, negatively affecting staff and student well-being. The book asserts that this situation reveals the essential tension at the heart of the university system, and explores the acceleration of this tension by analyzing a variety of teaching and research advances from Europe and Asia. Examining among other issues the call for creativity and critical thinking in the curriculum, the push for e-learning, and the advent of the digital humanities, this text offers a key analysis of the university's founding ideals and its constitutive relationship to technological acceleration.
Looking Within: Finding an Environmental Justice and Global Citizenship Lens
This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2013. Can we adopt human rights concepts, long used to frame problems of social justice, to define environmental justice? Can existing social institutions provide models and tools for achieving environmental justice? This volume views old models of agency through new lenses and examines how several social institutions, such as law, education and health care, address specific environmental problems. The volume presents arguments for human obligations towards the environment and future generations. Scholars assess the limitations of existing models and others point to recent failures in protecting the interests of indigenous groups or species. And on a hopeful note, examples are given of institutions that promise some success in effecting environmental goals. As this discussion of citizenship suggests, much like environmental justice, a global context both in definition and application is required.
The Borders of Subculture
This book aims to revisit the notion of subculture for the 21st century, reinterpreting it and extending its scope. On the one hand, the notion of resistance is redefined and applied to contemporary practices of cultural production and entrepreneurship. On the other hand, contributors reconsider the connection of subcultures to everyday culture, exploring more mainstream forms of cultural production and consumption across a wider range of social groups. As a consequence, this book extends the scope to look beyond the white, male, adolescent, urban cultures identified with earlier subcultural studies. Despite the prominence of "awkwardness" as cultural buzzword and descriptor of a sub-genre of contemporary film and television comedy, it has yet to be adequately theorized in academic film and media studies. Documentary’s Awkward Turn contributes a new critical paradigm to the field by presenting an analysis of awkward moments in documentary film and other reality-based media formats. It examines difficult and disrupted encounters between social actors on the screen, between filmmaker and subject, and between film and spectator. These encounters are, of course, often inter-connected. Awkward moments occur when an established mode of representation or reception is unexpectedly challenged, stalled, or altered: when an interviewee suddenly confronts the interviewer, when a subject who had been comfortable on camera begins to feel trapped in the frame, when a film perceived as a documentary turns out to be a parodic mockumentary. This book makes visible the ways in which awkwardness connects and subtends a range of transformative textual strategies, political and ethical problematics, and modalities of spectatorship in documentary film and media from the 1970s to the present.
