The Wink of an Eye -

When the author H. Peter Hoffmans wife, Doris, developed Alzheimers, a hospice volunteer was assigned to visit her once per week. Carole Fischer was not only a great help for the couple, but also paved the way to the creation of this memoir when she asked Hoffman how he met Doris. Spanning from 1925 through 2002, The Wink of an Eye Volume I chronicles the love shared between the author and his wife. Through vivid narration, Hoffman relives the many unforgettable moments he shared with his loving, wise, and beautiful wife. Amid time and distance, amid the terror of World War II and the pain of Alzheimers, the couple managed to keep their vow of sticking up and being faithful to each other until death parted them. Lush with nostalgic letters and photographs, The Wink of an Eye Volume I is a fascinating and inspiring true tale of a love that stood resilient through the test of time.

Pathological and Regenerative Plant Anatomy

Healthy plants are not only the aim of all gardeners, farmers, and foresters, but they also are the principal study object of plant biologists. However, it is only the stressed, injured, or diseased plant which exhibits the full range of possible structural and functional responses to challenges by harmful abiotic or biotic stimuli, consisting of highly variable forms of degeneration, adaptation, defense, or regeneration. In medicine, books on diseases are obviously much more numerous than books on healthy humans; in botany, by comparison, books on injured and diseased plants are much rarer. The present text tries to comprehend the current status of our knowledge of the possible structural c...

Roth Time

Sculptor, poet, diarist, graphic designer, pioneer artist's book maker, performer, publisher, musician, and, most of all, provocateur, Dieter Roth has long been beloved as an artist's artist. Known for his mistrust of all art institutions and commercial galleries--he once referred to museums as funeral homes--he was also known for his generosity to friends, his collaborative spirit, and for including his family in his art making. Much to the frustration of any gallery that tried to exhibit his work (supposedly none more than once), Roth thumbed his nose at those who valued high purpose and permanence in art. Constantly trying to undo his art education, he would set up systems that discourage...

Added Value of 3D Imaging in the Diagnosis and Prognostication of Patients with Right Ventricular Dysfunction

Right ventricular (RV) function has proven to be a prognostic factor in heart failure with reduced and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction or in pulmonary arterial hypertension. RV function is also a cornerstone in managing relatively novel clinical issues, such as mechanical circulatory support devices or grown-up congenital heart diseases. Despite the notable amount of circumferentially oriented myofibers in the subepicardial layer of the RV myocardium, the non-longitudinal motion directions are often neglected in the everyday assessment of RV function. The complex RV contraction pattern, however, incorporates distinct mechanical components. 3D imaging may enable capturing subtle RV dysfunction, which can be undetectable by conventional methods. Novel 3D-based parameters may allow an earlier diagnosis and better risk stratification of numerous cardiac and primarily non-cardiac diseases.

Gender Politics in the Expanding European Union

Gender Politics in the Expanding European Union

In May 2004, after bringing their legislation into accordance with EU regulations, ten more countries joined the European Union. The contributors to this volume assess the impact of this historical development on gender relations in the new and old EU member states. Instead of focusing on either western or eastern Europe, this book investigates the similarities and differences in diverse parts of Europe. Although initially limited, gender equality was part of the original framework of the European Union, an organization often more open than national governments to feminist demands, as this volume illustrates with case studies from eastern and western Europe. The enlargement process thus provides some important policy instruments for increasing equality between men and women.
