This volume is the outgrowth of a conference devoted to William K. Clifford entitled, "New Trends in Geometrical and Topological Methods", which was held at the University of Madeira in July and August 1995. The aim of the conference was to bring together active workers in fields linked to Clifford's work and to foster the exchange of ideas between mathematicians and theoretical physicists. Divided into 6 one-day sessions, each session was devoted to a specific aspect of Clifford's work. This volume is an attempt to bring the Clifford legacy in a new perspective to a larger community of mathematicians and physicists. New concepts, ideas, and results stemming from Clifford's work are discussed. Containing papers presented or submitted to the conference, each article is self-contained.
The symbiotic of these two topics creates a natural combination for a conference on dynamics. Topics covered include twist maps, the Aubrey-Mather theory, Arnold diffusion, qualitative and topological studies of systems, and variational methods, as well as specific topics such as Melnikov's procedure and the singularity properties of particular systems.
There are also several survey articles on recent developments in multiple trigonometric series, dyadic harmonic analysis, special functions, analysis on fractals, and shock waves, as well as papers with new results in nonlinear differential equations. These survey articles, along with several of the research articles, cover a wide variety of applications such as turbulence, general relativity and black holes, neural networks, and diffusion and wave propagation in porous media.
Ten research reports illustrate the many directions the field is taking, and feature problems on special models such as Fanos and their fibrations, adjunctions and subadjunction formuli, and projectivity and projective embeddings. This collection of papers by outstanding contributors in analysis, partial differential equations and several complex variables is dedicated to Professor Treves in honour of his 65th birthday. There are five excellent survey articles covering analytic singularities, holomorphically nondegenerate algebraic hypersurfaces, analyticity of CR mappings, removable singularities of vector fields and local solvability for systems of vector fields. The other papers are original research contributions on topics such as Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations, Toeplitz operators, elliptic structures, complexification of Lie groups, and pseudo-differential operators.
This book presents a collection of papers on certain aspects of general operator theory related to classes of important operators: singular integral, Toeplitz and Bergman opertors, convolution operators on Lie groups, pseudodifferential operators, etc. The study of these operators arises from integral representations for different classes of functions, enriches pure opertor theory, and is influential and beneficial for important areas of analysis. Particular attention is paid to the fruitful interplay of recent developments of complex and hypercomplex analysis on one side and to operator theory on the other. The majority of papers illustrate this interplay as well as related applications. The papers represent the proceedings of the conference "Operator Theory and Complex and Hypercomplex Analysis", held in Decenber 1994 in Mexico City.
This volume contains the refereed proceedings of the special session on Optimization and Nonlinear Analysis held at the Joint American Mathematical Society-Israel Mathematical Union Meeting which took place at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in May 1995. This book contains proceedings of the research conference on algebraic K-theory which took place in Poznan, Poland in September 1995. The conference concluded the activity of the algebraic K-theory seminar held at the Adam Mickiewicz University in the academic year 1994-1995. Talks at the conference covered a wide range of current research activities in algebraic K-theory. In particular, the following topics were covered * K-theory of fields and rings of integers * K-theory of elliptic and modular curves * Theory of motives, motivic cohomology, Beilinson conjectures * algebraic K-theory of topological spaces, topological Hochschild homology and cyclic homology. The mathematical works of Lars Ahlfors and Lipman Bers are fundamental and lasting. They have influenced and altered the development of twentieth century mathematics. The personalities of these two scientists helped create a mathematical family and have had a permanent positive effect on a whole generation of mathematicians. Their mathematical heritage continues to lead succeeding generations.
