Since the last edition was published in 1991, the "Merian" has established itself as the standard reference on this topic, and remains unmatched in the breadth of material covered. This new edition has 20 % more pages while being more clearly and concisely structured. New topical features are the focus on nutritional aspects and the coverage of further elements, including non-metals. The newly added chapters cover more than 15 essential elements, as well as some of environmental and nutritional importance. While many chapters of the previous edition have been practically rewritten to accommodate the rapid progress made in this field, all the contributions have been revised and updated to pre...

This book offers a review of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and its application in online condition monitoring of electrochemical devices, focusing on the practicalities of performing fast and accurate EIS. The first part of the book addresses the theoretical aspects of the fast EIS technique, including stochastic excitation signals, time-frequency signal processing, and statistical analysis of impedance measurements. The second part presents an application of the fast EIS technique for condition monitoring and evaluates the performance of the proposed fast EIS methodology in three different types of electrochemical devices: a Li-ion battery, a Li-S cell, and a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell. Uniquely, in addition to theoretical aspects the book provides practical guidelines for implementation, commissioning, and exploitation of EIS for condition monitoring of electrochemical devices, making it a valuable resource for practicing engineers as well as researchers.

Science and Skiing

The first International Congress on Science and Skiing was held in Austria in January 1996. The main aim of the conference was to bring together original key research in this area and provid an essential update for those in the field. The lnk between theory and practice was also addressed, making the research more applicable for both researchers and coaches. This book is divided into five parts, each containing a group of papers that are related by theme or disciplineary approach. They are as follows: Biomechanics of Skiing; Fitness testing and Training in Skiing; Movement Control and Psychology in Skiing; Physiology of Skiing and Sociology of Skiing. The conclusions drawn from the conference represent an invaluable practical reference for sports scientists, coached, skiers and all those involved in this area.

Non-Conventional Yeasts in Genetics, Biochemistry and Biotechnology

Most information on yeasts derives from experiments with the conventional yeasts Saccaromyces cerevisiae and Schizossaccharomyces pombe, the complete nuclear and mitochondrial genome of which has also been sequenced. For all other non-conventional yeasts, investigations are in progress and the rapid development of molecular techniques has allowed an insight also into a variety of non-conventional yeasts. In this bench manual, over 70 practical protocols using 15 different non-conventional yeast species and in addition several protocols of general use are described in detail. All of these experiments on the genetics, biochemistry and biotechnology of yeasts have been contributed by renowned laboratories and have been reproduced many times. The reliable protocols are thus ideally suited also for undergraduate and graduate practical courses.

Computational Discovery of Scientific Knowledge

This survey provides an introduction to computational approaches to the discovery of communicable scientific knowledge and details recent advances. It is partly inspired by the contributions of the International Symposium on Computational Discovery of Communicable Knowledge, held in Stanford, CA, USA in March 2001, a number of additional invited contributions provide coverage of recent research in computational discovery.
