Maverick Archdeacon Robert Hammond, Minister of St. Barnabas' Church, established Hammond's Pioneer Homes during the depths of the Great Depression to provide affordable homes for struggling families. By 1940, Hammondville, on the outskirts of Sydney, Australia, had 110 homes, a school, a general store, a post office, and a church, and was a nationally recognized model for small-scale land settlement. Today, HammondCare serves a wide range of people with complex health and aged-care needs through dementia and aged-care services, palliative care, rehabilitation, and mental health programs. This unusual and surprising company history traces a fascinating journey, beginning with an archdeacon with big dreams in Depression-era Sydney and ending with HammondCare's transformation into one of the most respected health and aged-care providers in Australia.

Spirituality

People in many cultures have long been aware of themselves as having a spirit as well as body and as being influenced by spiritual energies and spiritual prescences. Nurses know that something exists beyond the day-to-day care of people. Nurses are with people in time of crisis, when the mind turns to thoughts of what exists beyond. When a nurse can help someone to confront issues of doubt and belief, the sense of fulfilment explains why nurses do what they do. Spirituality: The Heart of Nursing is written by Australia nurses, from their own experience, for the benefit of other nurses. The message of the book is that nurses are special people concious that our spiritual well-being is just as important as our physical health.

On the Discursive Deconstruction and Reconstruction of Europe

Europe is the name for a scintillating variety of historically emerged concepts, constantly developed and discussed over time. Its complexity and fuzziness is reflected in a multitude of myths, topoi, symbols and boundaries, which all constitute shared knowledge of the concept of EUROPE and which continue to influence attempts to (de- and re-)construct European identity. The case studies collected in this volume investigate the competing concepts of Europe in political and public discourses from a wide range of perspectives (e.g. frame semantics, discourse linguistics, multimodal analysis), focusing on the following aspects: How is EUROPE conceptualised, (re-)negotiated and legitimised by different political actors, political bodies and institutions? How does “the European idea” change throughout history and how is the re-emerging idea of nationality evaluated?

Playing with Mental Models

In this book, the author uses a mental-model theory of communication to investigate the acclaimed British situation comedy The Office. The approach taken is multi-disciplinary, and focuses on questions as: What are mental models and what role do they play in communication in general, and in creating and watching The Office in particular? Whose mental models are involved in creating and watching The Office? How do these mental models relate to each other? How exactly do the creators of The Office and their audience engage in constructing, exchanging and coordinating mental models? How do mental models and their comic use relate to humour and humour theories and what is the nature of play in the deployment of mental models in comedy? The book is aimed at humour scholars from various backgrounds and at people interested in communication in general.
