Enlightened Monks
Enlightened Monks investigates the social, cultural, philosophical, and theological challenges the German Benedictines had to face between 1740 and 1803, and how the Enlightenment process influenced the self-understanding and lifestyle of these religious communities. It had an impact on their forms of communication, their transfer of knowledge, their relationships to worldly authorities and to the academic world, and also their theology and philosophy. The multifaceted achievements of enlightened monks, which included a strong belief in individual freedom, tolerance, human rights, and non-violence, show that monasticism was on the way to becoming fully integrated into the Enlightenment. Ulrich L. Lehner refutes the widespread assumption that monks were reactionary enemies of Enlightenment ideas. On the contrary, he demonstrates that many Benedictines implemented the new ideas of the time into their own systems of thought. This revisionist account contributes to a better understanding not only of monastic culture in Central Europe, but also of Catholic religious culture in general.

National Monuments and Nationalism in 19th Century Germany
No century in modern European history has built monuments with more enthusiasm than the 19th. Of the hundreds of monuments erected, those which sprang from a nation-wide initiative and addressed themselves to a nation, rather than part of a nation, we may call national monuments. Nelson's Column in London or the Arc de Triomphe in Paris are obvious examples. In Germany the 19th century witnessed a veritable flood of monuments, many of which rank as national monuments. These reflected and contributed to a developing sense of national identity and the search for national unity; they also document an unsuccessful effort to create a «genuinely German» style. They constitute a historical record, quite apart from aesthetic appeal or ideological message. As this historical record is examined, German national monuments of the 19th century are described and interpreted against the background of the nationalism which gave birth to them.

Das Augustinerchorherrenstift Bernried, eine Gründung des 12. Jahrhunderts, beheimatete bis zur Säkularisation 1803 einen Augustinerchorherrenkonvent. Die Stiftung des Grafenpaares Otto und Adelheid von Valley gehörte zu den im Zuge der Reformbewegung der Regularkanoniker gegründeten Stiften. Für die Region um Bernried am Starnberger See wirkte das Stift als gestalterische Kraft über sechs Jahrhunderte hinweg. Nach dem bewährten Schema der Germania Sacra skizziert Walburga Scherbaum die Geschichte, die Verfassung, das geistige und religiöse Leben, Besitzgeschichte und vor allem das Personal des Stiftes von der Gründung bis zur Aufhebung.
