This book addresses the links between war, state and sovereignty using an interdisciplinary approach. The authors and editors investigate the transformation of the state through the practices of security governance - an effective way to question the evolution of authority and legitimacy of state violence, and the organisation of human societies. This work contributes to the understanding of the transformation of state through the prism of security challenges and provides the means to identify the evolution of their regalian contours, the legal and technical forms of regulating violence, and the legitimisation of public power. This volume shows that the contribution of the social sciences is decisive for understanding the changes of the role and insertion of armed forces in their political, social and professional environment. Grégory Daho is Associate Professor of Political Science at University Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne, France Yann Richard is Professor of Geography at University Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne, France.
The book sheds new lights on the evolution of Russian space activities with a focus on their strategy of international cooperation. This analysis is carried out in relation to the evolution of the domestic and international dynamics that have been impacting the country’s direction in space, with the ultimate goal of providing an assessment on their impact for current and foreseeable Europe-Russia space relations. Russia has traditionally been one of the two main strategic partners for Europe in its space endeavor. Hitherto, long-standing cooperation has been nurtured between the two actors in various areas, from scientific research to space transportation and human spaceflight. In recent years, however, a number of endogenous and exogenous developments has triggered significant changes in Russia’s space posture. These changes are evident in the adjustment of Russia’s space policies and programmatic goals, in the restructuring of the domestic space industry as well as in the attitude towards international space partnerships.
India is among the few countries with home made satellites in orbit. Indian Space programme while being impressive with arrays of achievements in peaceful use of the space has woefully lacked in dedicated military applications. Admittedly cartographic platforms in the orbit can be used by the military to meet their cartographic needs but, they fall short of the 10-15cm (4”-6”) capabilities of the best military satellites today. In “Space Security from the Indian Perspective”, the author examines the dimension of the space threat emanating from our adversaries and need to develop our own military capability in the space .He argues that reliance of space is not exclusive to defence alone in fact the dependence of civil sector is more critical. In defence, we need not only to develop affordable options but also take steps to safeguard our space assets to ensure their continued use. This book examines the ramification of the military space capability and the choices available to India to safeguard its space assets which would interest both the generalists and the specialists.

Beginning in the early days of the Space Age - well before the advent of manned spaceflight - the United States, followed soon by other nations, undertook an ambitious effort to study the planets of the solar system. The remarkable fruits of this research revolutionized the public's view of their celestial neighbors, capturing the imaginations of people from all backgrounds like nothing else save the Apollo lunar missions. From the first space probes to the most recent planetary rovers, they have continually delivered impressive discoveries and reshaped our understanding of the cosmos. Offering fascinating investigations into this crucial chapter in space history, this collection of specially commissioned essays from leading historians opens new vistas in our understanding of the development of planetary science.
