Does going green change the face of design or only its content? The first book to outline principles for the aesthetics of sustainable design, The Shape of Green argues that beauty is inherent to sustainability, for how things look and feel is as important as how they’re made. In addition to examining what makes something attractive or emotionally pleasing, Hosey connects these questions with practical design challenges. Can the shape of a car make it more aerodynamic and more attractive at the same time? Could buildings be constructed of porous materials that simultaneously clean the air and soothe the skin? Can cities become verdant, productive landscapes instead of wastelands of concrete? Drawing from a wealth of scientific research, Hosey demonstrates that form and image can enhance conservation, comfort, and community at every scale of design, from products to buildings to cities. Fully embracing the principles of ecology could revolutionize every aspect of design, in substance and in style. Aesthetic attraction isn’t a superficial concern — it’s an environmental imperative. Beauty could save the planet.

Modernist architects were part of a larger social movement that believed technology would bring a better future. Today, we can see that we need to make selective use of technology, using technologies that are beneficial and controlling those that are destructive. Beginning in the 1970s, postmodern architects were part of a larger social movement to use technology for human purposes. But today’s avant gardists have rejected this humanist impulse and regressed to the modernist fascination with technology for its own sake, even if their designs are cold and sterile—and even if their designs are so antihuman that they make people feel sick. The avant gardists are conservatives, celebrating t...

This book contains most of the papers presented in the Eco-Architecture 2010 conference, which was the third edition of the International Conference on Harmonisation between Architecture and Nature. Previous editions, that were very successful were held previously in the New Forest, UK, in 2006 and the Algarve, Portugal in 2008 and demonstrated the importance of a forum like this to discuss the characteristics and challenges of such architectural vision. Eco-Architecture implies a new approach to the design process intended to harmonise its products with nature. This involves ideas such as minimum use of energy at each stage of the building process, taking into account the amount required du...

Women's Retreat

What does a path to become a faculty member look like? What are the merits? What are the roadblocks? How do I balance personal and professional aspirations? Looking for answers to these questions can be overwhelming and discouraging. This book offers inspiration and support to female faculty members in higher education who are at various stages of their professional development. Twenty-four educators share both their intuitive voices and practical knowledge on the topics of career development, balancing personal and professional life, cultural and individual identity, and spirituality. This collective sharing will help readers become free from an impasse, take a leap of faith, and see roadblocks from a slightly different perspective.

NBS is mechanizing a catalog of currently available information sources and services. Information from recent surveys of machine readable, commercially available bibliographic data bases, and the various current awareness, batch retrospective, and interactive retrospective services which can access them, has been correlated and converted into a machine-readable data base. A prototype searching capability has been established on an operational interactive retrieval system. Reasons for establishing the catalog and the choice of the initial information are detailed and the prototype implementation is described. Sample queries are included, as well as a to-date listing of the catalog. Plans for future development are discussed.

Annual Review of Information Science & Technology

ARIST, published annually since 1966, is a landmark publication within the information science community. It surveys the landscape of information science and technology, providing an analytical, authoritative, and accessible overview of recent trends and significant developments. The range of topics varies considerably, reflecting the dynamism of the discipline and the diversity of theoretical and applied perspectives. While ARIST continues to cover key topics associated with classical information science (e.g., bibliometrics, information retrieval), editor Blaise Cronin is selectively expanding its footprint in an effort to connect information science more tightly with cognate academic and professional communities.
