This novel retraces Eder dos Santos unlikely path to qualifying and competing in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro's Olympic marathon event. Born and raised in a small, agricultural community in Brazil's heartland, each of the winding 26 miles (or chapters) are flashbacks of Eder's past - church, family, work, romance, marriage, birth, and death. His life and this marathon have ups and downs that will test both his character and his beliefs, as Eder confronts world-class runners from around the globe during the race through the beautiful streets and beaches of Rio. Eder's gifted, inspirational, and extraordinary wife, Gelita, is the guiding light that helps him through each the twisting turns. The magnificent marathon competition is revealed through the eyes of two broadcasting commentators who recount the drama as the race unfolds. Experts agree that man has physically progressed to being able to run a sub two hour marathon and now it is more a matter of mind over body, and, of course, favorable race day conditions.
This book is an experimental physics textbook on classical mechanics focusing on the development of experimental skills by means of discussion of different aspects of the experimental setup and the assessment of common issues such as accuracy and graphical representation. The most important topics of an experimental physics course on mechanics are covered and the main concepts are explored in detail. Each chapter didactically connects the experiment and the theoretical models available to explain it. Real data from the proposed experiments are presented and a clear discussion over the theoretical models is given. Special attention is also dedicated to the experimental uncertainty of measurements and graphical representation of the results. In many of the experiments, the application of video analysis is proposed and compared with traditional methods.
Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF), the process by which gaseous N2 is converted into ammonia (NH3) via the enzyme nitrogenase, is crucial for the availability of nitrogen (N) in the terrestrial ecosystem. Some bacteria have the remarkable capacity to fix atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia under ambient conditions, a reaction only mimicked on an industrial scale by a chemical process. This microbiological process converts atmospheric nitrogen into a plant-usable form, thus decreasing the need to use chemical fertilizers in crop production. Chapters in this volume cover different aspects of this fantastic phenomenon, including biofertilizer, organic nitrogen in agricultural systems, nitrogen fertilization for sustainable crop production, and others. This book is designed for researchers, students and general readers.
