This text presents the contrasting perspectives of some of the leading figures involved in shaping the field of childhood studies over the last 30 years. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 22 high profile pioneers in the subject, Carmel Smith and Sheila Greene share a wealth of experiences in this innovative field.
Childhood
Childhood is an extremely complex and highly contested concept. It refers to a life phase as well as to the age group defined as children, but is also a cultural construction, part of the social and economic structure of communities. The key scholarship collected, introduced, and reprinted in these volumes reflects this complexity and introduces the reader to the wide variety of interpretations that have been and continue to be placed on it. It might be suggested that the push or initiative in theorizing childhood has derived from advances within sociology and anthropology. However, the future provides potential for interdisciplinary study, which this collection also reflects. The contemporary study of childhood must comprise a conjoining of disciplines: sociology; anthropology; psychology; social geography; history; philosophy; and socio-legal theory, all have something to add to the field and are represented within the collection.

Mema's House, Mexico City
Mema's house is in the poor barrio Nezahualcoyotl, a crowded urban space on the outskirts of Mexico City where people survive with the help of family, neighbors, and friends. This house is a sanctuary for a group of young, homosexual men who meet to do what they can't do openly at home. They chat, flirt, listen to music, and smoke marijuana. Australia's Children's Courts Today and Tomorrow
The Children’s Court is one of society’s most important social institutions. At the same time, it is steeped in controversy. This is in large measure due to the persistence and complexity of the problems with which it deals, namely, juvenile crime and child abuse and neglect. Despite the importance of the Children’s Court as a means of holding young people accountable for their anti-social behaviour and parents for the care of their children, it has not been the subject of close study. Certainly it has not been previously studied nationally. This book, an edited collection, is based on the findings of study that spanned the six States and two Territories of Australia. The study sought to examine the current challenges faced by the Children’s Court and to identify desirable and feasible directions for reform in each State and Territory. A further unique feature of this study is that it canvassed the views of judges and magistrates who preside over this court.
Generous Betrayal
All over Western Europe, the lot of many non-Western immigrants is one of marginalization, discrimination, and increasing segregation. In this bold and controversial book, Unni Wikan shows how an excessive respect for "their culture" has been part of the problem. Culture has become a new concept of race, sustaining ethnic identity politics that subvert human rights—especially for women and children. Fearful of being considered racist, state agencies have sacrificed freedom and equality in the name of culture. Comparing her native Norway to Western Europe and the United States, Wikan focuses on people caught in turmoil, how institutions function, and the ways in which public opinion is shaped and state policies determined. Contradictions arise between policies of respect for minority cultures, welfare, and freedom, but the goal is the same: to create a society committed to both social justice and respect for human rights. Writing with power and grace, Wikan makes a plea for a renewed moral vitality and human empathy that can pave the way for more effective social policies and create change.
Children and the Good Life
In April 2009, an inspiring international conference was held at Bielefeld on the topic "Children and the Good Life: New Challenges for Research on Children." The focus was on how we can define and measure a "good life" for children growing up in the modern world. This tied in with discussions on how convincing universalistic theories are, what research on children can contribute, and how children themselves can be integrated into the research process and debates on the "good life." Discourses and the production of knowledge on the "good life" or "well-being" require a guiding idea or a theoretical frame. This frame can come from the feminist ethic of care or from the Human and Children's Rights Convention, from the idea of welfare, or from the Capability Approach.
