Data Science

The amount of new information is constantly increasing, faster than our ability to fully interpret and utilize it to improve human experiences. Addressing this asymmetry requires novel and revolutionary scientific methods and effective human and artificial intelligence interfaces. By lifting the concept of time from a positive real number to a 2D complex time (kime), this book uncovers a connection between artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and quantum mechanics. It proposes a new mathematical foundation for data science based on raising the 4D spacetime to a higher dimension where longitudinal data (e.g., time-series) are represented as manifolds (e.g., kime-surfaces). This new fra...

Probability and Statistics EBook

This is an Internet-based probability and statistics E-Book. The materials, tools and demonstrations presented in this E-Book would be very useful for advanced-placement (AP) statistics educational curriculum. The E-Book is initially developed by the UCLA Statistics Online Computational Resource (SOCR). However, all statistics instructors, researchers and educators are encouraged to contribute to this project and improve the content of these learning materials. There are 4 novel features of this specific Statistics EBook. It is community-built, completely open-access (in terms of use and contributions), blends information technology, scientific techniques and modern pedagogical concepts, and is multilingual.

Provenance and Annotation of Data and Processes

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the Second International Provenance and Annotation Workshop, IPAW 2008, held in Salt Lake City, UT, USA, in June 2007. The 14 revised full papers and 15 revised short and demo papers presented together with 2 keynote lectures were carefully reviewed and selected from 40 submissions. The paper are organized in topical sections on provenance: models and querying; provenance: visualization, failures, identity; provenance and workflows; provenance for streams and collaboration; and applications.

It's Online, Therefore it Exists!

This handbook provides data, materials and tools for technology-enhanced science education. These resources were presented at the 2009 Statistics Online Computational Resource (SOCR) Continuing Education workshop at UCLA. The handbook covers continuing education and training for probability and statistics instructors. Specifically this workshop handbook includes validated educational materials, novel computational tools and useful pedagogical techniques and instruments for statistics education. Examples of these materials include SOCR Java applets for distributions, experiments, analysis, modeling and data exploration, various activities for hands-on demonstrations and virtual experimentation. The SOCR philosophy is that in science education, one-size-does-not-fit-all! The handbook provides many examples of tools, data, materials and infrastructure for technology enhanced science education. However, it?s ultimately the instructor?s responsibility to wrap these resources into a coherent set of materials appropriate for their concrete classes, student?s maturity and course syllabi.

Recent Advances and the Future Generation of Neuroinformatics Infrastructure

The huge volume of multi-modal neuroimaging data across different neuroscience communities has posed a daunting challenge to traditional methods of data sharing, data archiving, data processing and data analysis. Neuroinformatics plays a crucial role in creating advanced methodologies and tools for the handling of varied and heterogeneous datasets in order to better understand the structure and function of the brain. These tools and methodologies not only enhance data collection, analysis, integration, interpretation, modeling, and dissemination of data, but also promote data sharing and collaboration. This Neuroinformatics Research Topic aims to summarize the state-of-art of the current ach...

Neuroimaging Workflow Design and Data-Mining

With the increasing number of neuroimaging studies appearing yearly in the literature, the need to consider the synthesis of the underlying data into new knowledge and research directions has never been more important. The development of large-scale databases and grid-enabled computing has laid the groundwork for mining these rich datasets beyond the scope of their initial collection. Additionally, meta-analyses of the summary results contained in published research articles have provided a powerful way to explore hidden trends in the neuroscience literature. In each case, the processing of data requires a careful consideration of the individual processing steps involved and how they can be ...

Quantum Mechanics

This book covers the basic ideas of quantum mechanics, with emphasis on concepts, calculations, and their applications in many areas of modern science and technology. As opposed to other available introductions to quantum mechanics, this book was developed in close collaboration with students in order to guarantee that the explanations and exercises are clear and effective.

Computational Biomechanics for Medicine

Mathematical modelling and computer simulation have proved tremendously successful in engineering. One of the greatest challenges for mechanists is to extend the success of computational mechanics to fields outside traditional engineering, in particular to biology, biomedical sciences, and medicine. The proposed workshop will provide an opportunity for computational biomechanics specialists to present and exchange opinions on the opportunities of applying their techniques to computer-integrated medicine. For example, continuum mechanics models provide a rational basis for analysing biomedical images by constraining the solution to biologically reasonable motions and processes. Biomechanical modelling can also provide clinically important information about the physical status of the underlying biology, integrating information across molecular, tissue, organ, and organism scales. The main goal of this workshop is to showcase the clinical and scientific utility of computational biomechanics in computer-integrated medicine.
